Short term insurance

    Hey!

Just wondering if there is any insurer in Ireland who provides short term insurance (weekend/week) for being insured on someone elses car?

Background: I am buying a car off my sister. she's struggling to find the ownership form. She will have to order a replacement before we can fill in the ownership change to be sent off.

I'm 22 and have recently passed the test, so only have 6 months no claims as a named driver.
Insurance companies refuse to insure unless I'm the registered owner (at lease any that have given reasonable quotes online)
Getting added as a named driver on my sisters policy is the obvious solution however they have a min age limit of 23. (The irony that it will be less than a week until I am 23 is not lost on me - RSA is the insurer)

Any idea's/help/suggestions will be much appreciated :D

Say you have purchased the car and the form is being sent off, then backdate the form to the date of sale and you shouldn't have any problem as you would have been the owner as of that date.

I've done it many a time with buying a car, no problems for me.

    EDIT:

oh, and do it by phone, those internet things are rubbish in these situations. :P

Don't know about insurance, but your sister can declare her registration documents lost and buy replacement docs:

There's a difference between legal owner and registered owner (though normally both are the same person). The legal owner actually owns the car, the registered owner is responsible for is legal use. Get a sales receipt from your sister, then check if insurers will accept that as proof you have an insurable interest in the car. Forget on-line insurance, go to a broker or agent so you can discuss your situation and even get a better price.

    Thanks I'll ring up tomorrow,

Yeah she'll be ordering replacement docs tomorrow, there's a risk that we wouldn't have them in time for next weekend, but yeah I'll ask a broker about whether I need to be 'registered owner' as opposed to 'legal owner'

    Thanks guys!
