hi i might be buying a peugeot 406 2.0 hdi 110 tomorrow i drove it yesterday and everything is fine with it, but i have had 2 previous cars and i need to change the clutch in both so i think i might be a little heavy on the clutch so could anyone tell me how much to get the garage to supply the clutch kit and fit it. it is a year 2000 peugeot 406 2.0 hdi 110.

also is there anything important that i should just check when i get there to pick it up?

Those engines are good from what I hear and the 406 is a pretty nice car all around.

Were the other cars yours from new? Maybe you just got unlucky? All the same, maybe correcting your driving style would be a better option than changing the clutch? Well, it would be, I mean, if that is why your clutches are wearing out!

I can't see what I do to burn the clutches out

Riding the clutch on hills instead of using the handbrake and doing a proper hill start could be one.

Towing other cars etc while accelerating hard in the biting point.

Having a heavy load in the car and not progressing at a reasonable speed relative to the strain you're putting on the clutch before it fully engages.

These things and more could be the problem! A lot of stop start traffic would do the same as well, I would guess.

A clutch kit for a 110 is around €200. I haven't a clue how long it would take to do the job but if its like my 1.9td it will be a time consuming job due to the stuff you have to take off (can be fiddly in places).

A very rough estimate would be around €400 to €500 for that job from a garage

New to the game with 406's myself, bought mine last month! There is a poster called Row, he's the person to ask on 406's :)

So far from looking at various 406's check:
    • Turbo (smoke, excessive whine etc)
    • DMF. Afaik the 110HDi has a DMF, check for smooth clutch changing and operation (no juddering, hard to engage etc)
    • Electrics. My car came with a non operating window and no right full beam, make sure all toys and essentials work
    • Condition of body, especially the underside. Some of these cars ended up with farmers and rarely get cleaned as a result of driving on muddy roads, yards etc

Ask for service history. Ask if stuff like has the belt, tensioner, roller and pump have been changed as that isn't a particularly easy job and the rollers and tensioner tend to get skipped if it has been done

Generally a very comfy car that handles well for its size, would definetly recommend one anyday :)
