This is primarily to get feedback on the forum from coaches (and club owners, one and the same?) and I won't be entertaining a general forum feedback thread (yes I hate those 'whats best for the street' threads too).

Do you find the forum beneficial to your club or events?.

We're already given a lot more leeway in term's of allowing people to advertise here than most other forum on boards.ie (mods don't set the terms re. advertising, we had to go fight for you guys to be allowed advertise).. So that being said, is there anything else ~ anything more we can do for you?, ie a club thread (these haven't been a good idea in the past as then you're restricted to posting in one thread and its never a stickie) or allowing two accounts - club and personal?.

    Fire away ladies and gentlemen.

I know that mods don't have a say in this and it's up to the boards team but two separate striking and grappling forums would be nice just because the amount of striking vs. grappling threads are around 50/50 also it would allow for more grappling/striking oriented opinions in each thread instead of stupid arguments happening and the thread being locked....there's already an MMA forum so I don't see why there shouldn't be a separate striking and grappling forum.

Hmmmm what more could we want , maybe to block individual posters from commiting on our own club lol
Well the ability to promote our clubs and advertise and in most cases get honest feedback and share knowledge is all we could want? yes there is some people who prefere to use here to try and degrade their fellow clubs ( arch rivals as these people see them) but the moderators here do a good job of keeping these keyboard warriors under some sort of control while allowing a fair forum for speech, it's not always perfect but what is?

Other boards forums such as cycling & ART have a training logs sub forum, which I think work well. Could be good at club level as well as an individual level for both club news/goals and personal goals/achievements/blog. From a newbie perspective, and those thinking of a bit of cross training, it also gives some perspective of what a club does beyond the simple clubs sticky add. It also provides an alternative to the likes of a facebook page which realistically only gets read by existing club members.

FWIW, we've had people come to train with us in UCD tai chi chuan as a direct result of boards, so many thanks. As someone only teaching on an occasional basis, it's always nice to meet a boardsie on the mats.

Cheers, thats something worth considering. I'll have a look at the format in the other forum and see how it might fit in here.

Great to hear people have trained with you after reading boards.ie, which brings me onto something else.. I've asked in the clubs stickie thread that people posting might consider a link on their club page to boards.ie SD&MA forum, anyway its no big deal really but I would love to see other styles post here.

The blog is something I'll certainly chat to the other moderators about.

    Thanks for the feed back.

I think it's quite good. If you ask politely you can put up threads about tournaments or camps etc. I think it's good that you can do that without being accused of shilling.

If you want my opinion, no change required.

If it would be possible a club/gym thread or list for each county would be helpful for people for people looking for places to train.

I'm not sure we can put any official rules about taking a relaxed attitude to advertising, but for me personally I like to see interesting threads threads that generate discussion.

Frequently, threads about seminars and competitions are the ones that generate the most discussion, so I don't like to delete them. As long as I think the person posting is likely to stick around to take feedback and answer questions they'll probably be OK. If they never post anything but notices, or they repeatedly bump their threads with empty posts when no one replies, I'm much more likely to remove them.

This Forum is in better nick now than it has been in any of its previous incarnations.

Creating a self defence sub forum would avoid a lot of messing though.

I reckon " A History of XYZ Martial art in Ireland" threads would be interesting if you got the right contributors. Probably cause civil wars though :pac:

Not sure if possible or what but i think it could be beneficial if you could have a thread for kickboxing and another for karate and another for judo etc and within each tread say kickboxing a thread for members clubs and whats going on in the club etc and in the general thread then competitions or general events etc.

There's nothing stopping you from starting one of these threads.

This could get out of control pretty quickly with everyone wanting a different thread for slight variants in styles. Most of the threads would end up ghost towns as well.

If you want to keep your club's profile up, you're best off just posting about the things that are going on. Don't be worried about having a special place to put it.

Well then if it could be a sticky and only mods or instructors or coaches could add to it.

I dont mean a thread for all the different wado or shodokan styles etc but one thread and add to that events thats going one.

Also if a thread aint added to then it becomes a ghost thread and in time it would just move down the pecking order.

Honestly, do you have events that you want to add, but you're not adding them because of the current set up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 715 ✭✭✭ants09

    Quick answer yes

now waiting to get banned :P

You'll need to explain why you don't feel like posting your events. Otherwise I don't think we're going to be able to remedy the situation.

I think a thread for each style could be benefical in the long run tbh
If i put up a event like the irish open 2012 and then the results or links to it and then want to add to it next year to add the irish open 2013 the thread would be old and be closed. also if somebody was interesting in say kickboxing and click on a sticky for kickboxing then they could see all events or details regarding kickboxing and then if they could drill down or search for more specific details regarding there particular style or if they are interested in events i think it be more benefical in the long run here tbh

This is a discussion board, the it's purpose is for having discussions, not keeping records. If you want to do that kind of thing you'd be best off finding somewhere else to do it and then linking back to it any time you wanted to bring it into a discussion here.

You need to think about who's using this forum and why they come here. I'll tell you one thing, it's not to find static information that is added to every couple of months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,549 ✭✭✭✭cowzerp

Stickys in general are awful and go unused, the less the better-anyone can start a thread on kickboxing and keep it bumped, If it's not bumped its clearly not been used.

Rush Boxing club and Rush Martial Arts head coach.

When you come onto the self defence & martial arts forum there are 2 threads regarding kickboxing and 3 threads regarding thai boxing and 5 threads about competitions

What i saying is regarding say kick boxing would it not be better off having one thread and all kick boxing ones goes in there and the same for thai boxing etc

TBH i dont know if it is feasable or not or if it can be achieved but thats my opinion and i think if run right it could be benefical in the long run to this forum.

As i said its just my opinion or my two cents worth ;)

If we made people talk about several kickboxing and muay thai competitions that were happening at the same time, it would get pretty confusing pretty quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 715 ✭✭✭ants09

If it was structured propertly or right then it could be done

If it wasnt then yes it could or would be confusing :)

Sorry I'm late coming into this discussion again, re. club & events threads.

They've been tried (in various formats) in the past and failed.

However if a club (lets use Barry for the craic) posts up "This is the official Barry Oglesby BJJ Roadshow Thread" and only posted in that well that would be his choice.

If a club done that well so be it, but it would be detrimental to the exposure the club and its events would have on boards.ie as between the clubs busy periods their discussion would drop off the front page and the people posting on various discussion's on a regular basis would keep the higher profile.

As goes with previous feedback threads this one will close very shortly otherwise they tend to end up being filled with every minor (and some major) grievances against the mods/forum, and there is an avenue for complaint re. mod action and its not here.

So if there is anything further from coaches I'd appreciate hearing it soon please because there are some changes coming to the forum and we'd like you to feel inclusive.

Just before you wrap it up can I just remind everyone - club owner or not - if you have an idea along the lines of wouldn't it be great if there was a thread for subject X then just go ahead and make that thread. The worst that can happen (assuming you haven't posted something obscene enough to get the guards called) is that no one posts in it, but that's the nature of discussion forums.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 498 ✭✭Damo W

Best its been, great to be able to post events etc. Cheers guys!
Possibly a requirement that if you do post an event/seminar etc. that one does a follow up post with a review of the event etc!?!?
[Maybe that's just me, I enjoy seeing/reading what's happening out there:)]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Doug Cartel

I don't know about making it a requirement but I think it's a good recommendation.

Just an update on this one.

I'm waiting for one important developement to come about for the forum before this one is a go'er.. But its a great idea and having checked out the other forum's with similar I've a fair idea how we should format it.

    Keep watching :D
