long story short, car stopped driving in D, every other gear works. looking at some merc forums, looks like it could be a b2 piston (what ever that is) I saw fluid on the ground under he booth about 70 miles from home, but did not panic as it was under the booth and yes I think it could have being red (was on the tarmac when I saw it)

The way I see it, might have to get it reconditioned. Automatic, merc, gearbox and recondition all in the same sentence spells expensive to me, which I can not afford.

Would anyone have any idea what kind of money are we talking about. Would like an idea before the garage comes back with a price to me, so I have my options opened. Thinking off buying a small van for 5 to 600, park up the merc. Dont want to but the tax is killing me. But if it was only a couple of hundred I would get it done.

Just a ball park so I know what to expect.
    Thanks

I got a w107 (3 speed) transmission rebuilt with new converter in 1997 in the UK for £750 sterling.
Your best bet would be a second hand one, but your taking a chance there too.
It may be just a leak, has the level dropped?

Dont know if the level dropped, got it towed straight to a garage. I suspect It had a leak and that could have done the damage. (the fluid on the ground)

The price you paid in in 97 would be way to much for me now. If it was a leak would the garage be able to tell easy enough and is it easy enough to fix?

What kind of money would a second hand one be? Like yourself would be worried about what I would be buying.

I dont want to be charge a couple of hundred quid by the garage just to tell me it needs to be reconditioned. I know he needs to make money and cover his costs (I am in business myself) That is why i am trying to find out as much info as I can before I phone him in the morning.

Hi - This may sound crazy but worth a try,
I had fault with auto gear box in W124, gears where shifting all over the place. Two garages said box should be replaced with reconditioned one (700-800 stg for box plus fitting 200-300 euro) however second garage noticed when car was on lift that there was a leak nothing to do with the gear box fault in the diesel fuel line back at the tank and fixed it for me while it was there, simple job can't remember cost maybe 20 euro.
Took car home to think about replacing gear box but would you believe gear box now worked perfect. Took car back to garage, they could believe either but suggested I change oil and filter in gear box which I did. Two years on now and gear box is sill O.K.
As I said worth a try - Good Luck

There are a few who advertise in D.D. that break Mercs, Jim in Wicklow comes to mind, I think I saw him advertising that he was breaking a W124. Good Luck.

What worries me about a gear box from another car, the same thing could happen to that one.

have a very good one second hand off 95 car still fitted so you can test it,a fsh history car, MB history, not handy man history,or fsh up to 96

    make me an offer

It would be worth doing an oil and filter change for the hell of it as suggested by ire6666 above.

I priced a few shops for a reconditioned merc gear box about 8 years ago (when I was buying my daily driver 300CE). I wanted to know what I'd have to have tucked away if the box calved. It was around 1000 euros at the time for a recon box, from 2 or 3 Dublin gearbox specialists.

Looks like its the Plate. If anyone knows anything about plates, please advise.

Also if I was to scrap or sell the car, approx what would I be looking at. two brand new tyres put on it last week. Its has the usual full leather, alloys ect

B1GFT, I think it would be a pity to break it, just because the gerabox is gone. WDB 123 has given you a good option. I think that car may have been driven from U.K. which would be a good test. Perhaps, he may give you a price to fit it as well. Then you can decide if is worth it. If you go back to earlier messages you will get his Phone No. and ask him.

What year is the car ?

The various B2 and K1 pistons are cheap and easy to fit. You could change the fluid and filter and whilst doing so fit the pistons. However I am not sure this will be your problem. The K1/2 pistons normally cause a flare on changes and generally dont prevent you from "getting" a gear.

The later electronic boxes gave trouble with the conductor plate, however I have not had to change one yet despite folk claiming they were needed. Normally its problems with the loom/connectors etc. which can be repaired.

Finally if your car has the later type box then battery voltage is critical. They do all sorts of strange things if the battery if suspect.

Most likely its low on fluid, and if your lucky, and its the later box, it could have leaked back through the electrical connector at the conductor plate, ie. loss of fluid AND fluid in the connection which can be interpreted via a diagnostic unit as a conductor plate problem.

    Best of luck !

I don't know a lot about auto boxes, but if it's finding every other gear except for D, then it sounds pretty positive, i.e. it might just be electrical.

In my experience the expensive problems occur when the box loses drive in all gears.

That said, and being the vulture that I am, I have a W124 200D in my possession that needs a few bits, so if you do end up scrapping your car I could well be interested!

    Hi Mercmad
the cars year is 95. he checked the fluid and said it was perfect as it was full and clean. I was chatting to him this am and he thinks its the plate and pressure as the gears have being taking longer to go up when i was driving it. he said he can hear/feel it trying to click through hence he thinks its the plate.
The problem he has giving me is he wont really know unless he takes the box out and even then he will have to send it to Dublin to guys who specialise in auto box's, so I could have a couple hundred bill from him and I could get a 700 bill from Dublin (I am only guessing figurers)

Is there a way to test the loom/connectors easily or those the box still have to come out.

No problem 8~) if i decide to scrap it I will send you a pm, I prefer if parts could be used to keep another car going.

200 to remove and 700 to repair, another 200 to put it back in, and it is still a recon gearbox with no guarantee maybe 3 months,It must be a good one

If you have an offer on a box that works, take it. Faffing around sending boxes here and there is wasting time and money.

Call the Merc scrappie in Lusk, he has everything there

Thanks w124, I have decided to sell/scrap it. The price to get it back on the road, no matter what option I take, recondition or second hand, and the fact that I struggle every 3 months to get the price of the tax together, has convinced me to part with it. I do very small mileage and have got my wife's car as she is getting a new one. Trust me its breaking my heart as it was and still is my dream car. Even if I could find some place to store it, I would.

How much would you take for it and what part of the world are you in?

  • Registered Users Posts: 163 ✭✭B1gft

I would prefer someone in this forum to buy it, then i know its being used, either fully or for parts. I have 2 pm's from members wanting to let them know when i am selling so I am going to send them a pm after this post.
Realisticly I would not take any less than 350. (I will be putting it up on done deal for 500, or selling the parts) There is two brand new tyres only bough last week, Mercedes alloys. Engine is perfect. Full leather (drivers seat has ware) I have a owners manual but I got that for nothing, so I have to offer it back to the guy that give it to me. If he does not want it, I will throw that in. Haynes manual as well. (there is rust on the drivers door)

I am in Tullamore and its in a garage in Tyrellspass. Let me know if your interested otherwise donedeal here I come.

Sorry I am only getting back to this now.

I would be interested in buying it also. Have you a link to the add please?

Sold this morning to member on the boards here, so at least some parts are going to be used to keep a very nice w124 on the road for more years.
Thanks for all the advice I got here, hopefully I will get another one soon but it will have to be a w123, 30 years old. The tax on the w124 was a killer for me. (heart broking thought)
