Erratic Garda behaviour

Odd one on the Cork South Ring Road this morning.

Firstly, I passed a Garda car pulled over heading Westbound between Kinsale Roundabout and the first Douglas exit. Parked with the window facing back towards traffic. No speed camera or anything point out the window.

Next, I came up to the back of a Garda car driving at about 50mph in the overtaking lane all the way from there to the Tunnel. Lights on blazing and holding up a large line of traffic who wanted to overtake, yet the Garda car kept in the overtaking lane for no reason I can think of.

When they reached the tunnel, they pulled into the left lane and then up the sliproad just before the entrance to the tunnel.

Can someone please explain what this was all about. I can think nothing more than blaggarding by the Gardai.

The first car was probably just monitoring traffic, they are allowed to do that you know :)

Maybe in the second example there was a problem ahead on the road and they were slowing down traffic so it could be dealt with.

Neither exactly erratic or earth shattering now are the lol

Just thought that the 2nd car's actions may have been linked somehow to the parked Garda car.

Parked Garda Car could have been doing ANPR checks too.

But whats the point of it ? There was no sign of any accident or anything.

Because it was cleared. Could have been something that was towed away? Breaking down in a tunnel is not the best place to break down

A third car ahead was clearing debris from the road.

By the time you reached that spot, the third car had cleared the road and driven off.

Happens all the time on the sth ring rd.

UK police call it a rolling roadblock - slowing traffic down to give time for something to be cleared ahead of it without bringing traffic to a complete standstill.

I'm only not surprised some g0bsh1te didn't try to undertake the Garda car.

If you think that's erratic then you've obviously never seen an emergency vehicle in a hurry with lights and sirens on!

If he was doing 50mph(80kmh).....whats the speed limit in and approaching the tunnel?

Its common in the states that a cop car will sit in the middle lane at the speed limit with lights on, thus slowing everyone down to the speed limit, rather then sitting with a camera trying to catch individuals.

100kph (coming in the direction he was) but immediately before the tunnel it's 80kph I think.

The chap isn't attacking them or anything, merely querying what they were up to.

Why not ? Quite a few continental countries have been known to use "rolling road block" methods to maximise motorway capacity on peak traffic days. The way it's done is that traffic is stopped at a certain point and once a sufficient number of cars has massed a traffic bike will ride at the front and start the lot rolling at around 80km/h ( restricted speed for lorries ) , no overtaking or lane changes except to leave or enter the motorway allowed and that can be kept up for hours at a time.

In THe case the OP described the speed limit is 100kph.

Its 80 from the airport to the kinsale road roundabout, not from the airport to the tunnel.
