I bought a 2008 opel astra and unfortunately it is the first car in i have owned in 10 years that doesn't have air con.
    So my question is
Is it possible to retrofit air con?
And if so what kind of cost would entail?

It would be possible, but you would need all the substantial amount of parts for the A/C system and fitting would involve removing the dash amongst other things.

Not financially viable for minimal benefits.

Life model is pretty basic, to be fair a few cars in that class don't have AC as standard

Would've though AC would be standard on everything these days, bar Dacias of course. :pac:

I know the mazda3 and the toyota auris didn't have it for a start, pug 308 didn't either as far as I remember

It depends on the market, You'd likely find that most Astra's in certain other European countries come with A/C, but its not something that we have traditionally had or needed in Ireland so its still not common on smaller cars.

Although my old model Astra van has A/C:P

This country is gass. A few warm days and suddenly everyone needs air con.

Suddenly everyone realises its not working, no wonder if you only use it once a year

I've used mine for about two mins every day this week after work to get rid of the heat out of the van after its been parked up for the day. That's the only situation I ever use it in Ireland.

It's great during murky weather for dehumidifying the cabin

Got into the car today and thanked my lucky stars for aircon. 30 degrees to 17 in 5 minutes :D

I use it more in the winter than in the summer to be honest.

The point I am really getting at is that in the past we have had hotter summers than in the last few years and most of us managed well without it. Now 2 or 3 days of above average temperatures and all of a sudden it becomes a must have for some people. Just think it is a little over the top.

It's just because your average joe soap knows that a lot of new cars have it as standard and sees it as something that everyone should have too. No one really needs it.

I haven't used the AC in the BMW yet at all...but I also have been driving with all the windows open pretty much all the time too! (That 6 cylinder!:D)

I never said it was a must
plus whats your point, you have stated you have air con

My point is that air con is more useful in this country during mild murky conditions which we get 11 months of the year rather than a few what we consider hot days, in the summer. Plenty of people don't notice it missing for those 11 months of the year.

If want to spend money retro fitting it then drive on, no skin off my nose.

Nothing compared to the winter tyre hysteria after a couple of rare bad winters.
