guys, whats your real world MPG on these?

my previous 2 cars averaged :

    E46 320d Auto 150bhp : 37
    E39 530d Auto 194bhp : 23

both cars were long term averages (min 6 months without resetting the OBC) so im trying to roughly judge what costs involved in getting into a GTi DSG.

i mostly do finglas - city center commute every day and the odd trip in the evenings. average annual mileage would be 5k approx.

trying to see if the reduced tax costs would balance out the increased petrol and insurance costs.

Wouldn't mind knowing either buying in the next week or so and 100% getting a DSG.

Only true figures can be got from an ECU readout though or so i have been told.

30mpg with normal driving seems about the consensus, DSG and remap improve this figure a little

There are so few decent DSG examples out there atm, dealership my dad buys his cars from in tuam has a povery spec one 2006 with average milage up for €11,500, dad thinks it's a great deal :p

My manual does about 28 Mpg doing 70/30% city driving. Improves to mid 30s if I do more motorway driving but once you start going over 120/130Kph it drops dramitically.

If your budgeting for fuel costs etc with lots of city driving then I'd lean towards 25mpg tbh. Decent car for the money though once the few niggles they can have are sorted out.

On your annual mileage, none of those would be material compared to what you are forking out extra (read: depreciation, finance or opportunity costs) when buying the Golf

If you do 23MPG in your 530d, you'd probably do something similar in the GTI DSG. The BMW is much heavier but diesel, the Golf is much lighter but petrol. Most of your driving is commuting stuck in traffic.

The one question pressing me: why downgrade from a 530d to a Golf? :)

Variety being the spice of life would be my guess, combined with he maybe made decent money on the 530d if past form is anything to go by  Wait 'till you see what's replacing the ZT, grim, very grim.

DSG Golf is a nice car, why not want one it's a comfortwagon with a fair bit of poke.

The 530d was out of tax. i was about to pump 771e for 6 months tax.
the bonnet and front bumper was progressively getting worse due to the stone chips and tbh was starting to look a little rough. it needs an oil change in the summer.

The biggest thing was handing over 1400 road tax for nothing! it just sickened me to the core. im a firm believer of 3 on and 2 off ;) but i dont want that hassle of constantly looking around the corner for a check point any more ;) a 2.0 litre motor tax is cheap in comparisson and i will be paying for a year up front on it.

i see the market changing and theres not many people prepared to by 30d's any more, nobody wants to pay the tax now, so i thought sell it now or i may never sell it, without losing too much that is!

Im not worried about depreciation, i have no car loans and buy whatever car i can with the funds from selling the last, so im just trying to figure out if my weekly costs will go up or down for now?

Nothing wrong at all with a Mk5 GTI, great car! Curious about the downgrade though, it isn't even really faster / sportier than a big saloon like a 530d

@kceire - fair enough, enjoy your new car (whatever you're getting) :)

People in this country generally don't mind suffering several thousand euro a year in depreciation, but do mind several hundred euro in motor tax :)

Me, I tend to take all costs into account. Funny me :D

My brother consitently gets slightly north of 35mpg from his manual GTi.

Im looking at 05 GTi's that tend to have all the depreciation done already or at least most of it!
One example, i can hop into tomorrow for the same money i got for the E39 ;)

    As I've said many times I'd consider a 2.0 or a 2.5 Alfa.

'05 GTI for E39 530d money? Go for it so :D

I had no idea Mk5 GTIs were so cheap now. Apologies for my previous arguments!

Just be aware that the 05s and some of the 06s have the AXX engine code which means the diverter valve and the PCV valve will probably need to be changed if not done already. If it feels a bit flat on the test drive that will almost certainly be the case. If you could scan it with Vagcom before buying it'd be nice.

    is it a big/expensive job?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

Nah, €250 would probably sort both. You mightn't need to but the early diverter valves were crap and tore very easily. Boost leaks out and you loose power. I'd also get the cam follower checked. If you google MKV Gti Cam follower you'll see why. About €30 to get it checked and about €50 to replace it.

23 mpg out of 530d sounds quite low... Surely people are getting more out of it.

And what's the obsession with that dsg gearbox? I talked to mechanic and all he said - go for manual.

Sounds realistic for mainly urban spins to me, one of the few realistic mpg figures I've seen on boards tbh.

A few days ago 30mpg was described as very heavy on petrol, only on boards.ie would you see that me thinks, unless you surfed tree hugging sites.

99% commuting use. i drove to galway last year with 4 lads, boot full of beer and clothes and that trip averages 44MPG, so once you fit the motorway or a decent speed, ie. 40mph the MPG goes north greatly!

DSG box is fantastic, auto for comfy cruising and lightening quick gear chabges when you want spped :D

after running an M3 SMG for a loaner, i was converted! and also considering my last 3 cars have been auto, im an auto person ;)

I had one for 4 years. 27-28mpg. Around 500-550kms per tank (55L tank). On a long journey with a light right foot you'd possibly get 35mpg ish.
