In a worked example I have of an integration it states the integral of (cosx)^2 = the integral of (1 + cos2x)/2

    How is this equality reached?

    Is this a known identity, (cosx)^2 = (1 + cos2x)/2 ?

    Thank you.

    Integral of (cosx)^2 = x/2 + sin2x/4 + c

    Integral of (1+cos2x)/2 = x/2 + sin2x/4 + c

    cos(2x)=(cosx)^2 - (sinx)^2
    cos(2x)=(cosx)^2 - (1 - (cosx)^2)
    cos(2x)=2(cosx)^2 - 1

    2(cosx)^2 = cos(2x) + 1
    (cosx)^2 = (cos(2x) + 1)/2
