Irish Air Crash Investigations in the 1960's

    Hi all,

I don't know if this has been covered here before but I have searched and I think not.

Does anybody know anything about the processes and organisations involved in investigating plane crashes here in the 1960's

I know that the dapartment of Transport and Power used to handle such things but I am specifically trying to find out about the methods and findings of the accident investigators.
And also the logistics, i.e how was wreckage taken away from sites and where did it go? Baldonnel, Gormanstown?

I am an avid reader of AAIU reports but recently I have become very interested in accidents that are too old to be cvered on their website, and in particular, Airliner crashes around shannon in the early 60's.

Any info would be much appreciated.

    Hi there,
Before a dedicated AAIU was set up, the Department simply tasked aircraft engineer Inspectors and a pilot from the Flight Ops section to investigate. Most, if not all, of the old reports are in the National Library. RW O'Sullivan was a prominent figure at the business of accident investigation in the Department. Wreckage was either disposed of by the airline or by the Department.
