So, my wife recently changed jobs and received her first full months salary, and the tax office has taken approx e1600 in tax, her HR rep says they tax office reviewed her figures and decided to take extra in one go as she was being under taxed or something or other, this leaves us a bit short this month, are they allowed to do this, should they not consult with her first or take it over a period?

The tax office doesn't calculate the tax taken from your wife's salary - that's the job of her employer (or payroll provider). The HR rep is not correct in the "tax office reviewed her figures" story.

She should check if her payroll provider or employer has the required tax details for her on file. It's possible that she didn't provide a PPS number to her employer, in which case her salary would be taxed at 41% under the Emergency Tax rules. If necessary, she would need to contact her tax office to let them know her new employer's address/ tax number.

If your wife recently changed jobs , she should have received a P45 and handed this to her new employers .

The figures on the P45 should be used by wages office in her new job .

It could be as simple as your wife changed job in the early part of this month, but her previous employers utilised her full tax credits for the final salary, leaving none for this month.
