    Hi,

I'm looking at starting college full time in September,
I will be getting let go from work at some stage over the next few weeks as things are drying up.

I'm 23, but I was told you can not claim back back to education allowance, unless you are out of work 9 months, is this correct?

It really messes me up if this is the case as there is no way I could afford to get through college for no months with a penny.

Does this only apply to full time courses? Or do part time courses fall under this aswell? E.g. If I was start a part time course in September could I claim social welfare?

    All help, greatly appreciated.

You can avail of the back to education part time option while on jsa/jsb, essentially you can study the approved part time course but you still must be looking for work.

    Back to Education Allowance
The Department of Social and Family Affairs’ Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) provides a range of education and training options from which an unemployed person can choose, or be directed to the most appropriate education or pathway for his/her needs.

Because our part-time courses are recognised by HETAC in Ireland, two options under this programme may be of further support to OU students who are seeking or claiming Jobseekers Allowance. These are respectively:

The Education, Training and Development Option
    The Part-Time Education Option
For further information, contact the Deciding Officer at your local Social Welfare Office or go to http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Forms/Documents/bte1.pdf

    links below contain more info

i hope its of some use, good luck :)

If you get statutory redundancy and qualify for one of the social welfare payments, then the nine month time period can be waived.
