    Hey, quick question.

If a buy a garmin edge 500 with heart rate monitor will the heart rate monitor work on its own for running or do you have to have the computer in proximity?

    Thanks

It'll talk to any ant+ display device. Obviously the edge is one, but so are a range of watch devices and even some phones.

cheers. Basically means I'd need more than just the heart rate strap on runs.

Would a forerunner do the same job as an edge?

I've no idea, look at the compatibility list, if it is ant+ it should work, though some of the watch ones have hrm built in I thought. Could well be wrong on that, best to check.
The hrm is dumb so to speak, it just broadcasts the reading to whatever will listen. The listening devices pair or filter what they listen out for.
