So I'm trying to reinstall Windows on my dell laptop but the OEM disc is giving me failures and blue screens. If I use a generic Windows 7 disc will i be able to use the the activation code on the bottom of the laptop? Alternatively do Dell give out replacements of the OEM discs?

    Thanks in advance

You should just be able to use the key that's on the laptop if you use a generic Windows CD. Just make sure it's the same version.

    Hi D4RK ONION,

My name is Vishal and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell.

Regarding you above post, you are not able to use the OEM disc that you recieved from Dell, which might be corrupted. If the activation code at the bottom doesnt work, may be version of Windows 7 you are installing might be different. Hence I would suggest you that if you need to install Dell OEM version of Windows 7, you can call Dell on number 800-624-9896 and get new Windows 7 CD, which will not ask you activation key. I am sure you will be able to install Windows 7 without any hassle.

    Hope this helps!!

    Thanks,

If you get failures and blue screens it may be something else triggering them, overheating, failing hard disk, dodgy RAM etc. But yes a generic OEM disc will work with windows 7 using the bottom activation code

To test if the CD is corrupt you could make an image - if there are any errors clean the disc and try again - of it and get it's checksum. cd2iso doesn't work so well in windows 7 though

Perhaps not relevant but I recently had a Toshiba laptop with Vista Business Edition installed on which the drive died. I used a retail Vista Home Premium disc I had and installed. At activation it said the key under the laptop was wrong for that version and instructed me to call MS Support line and type in a series of numbers to receive another series of numbers to enter. Once this was done Windows was activated and verified.

On other occasions I've used the same disc with the key attached to the laptop and everything went fine. Haven't tried this with Windows 7 yet but it's probably the same ?!
