D60 & Yongnuo External Flash issue

    Hi all,

My Yongnuo flash arrived a few weeks ago and had been working really well with TTL through the Nikon D60.

    YN-467IINikon.jpg

This evening I used the flash for 10 or 12 shots in less than 5 mins. Each of the images' data showed on the screen under the Flash Mode that the shots were "Optional, TTL" so the external flash was working fine with the TTL.

Without warning, the shots seemed to change and the Flash Mode section was showing a blank. The flashing question mark on the D60 screen was telling me that the light was low and I needed a flash... but the flash was on, and connected fine.. and was flashing each time I took a shot. The flash usually sends an LED grid shaped light onto the target but this is not happening now.

Even if I changed to Manual on the flash, I can control the strength of the light and it does flash when I hit the button.. However theres no data in the Flash Mode screen.

There's no error lights on the flash.

Could it be that I took too many shots in a short amount of time?

This happened a week or so ago and I brought the flash to a friends house and it worked fine on his Nikon. I reset my D60 and hey presto.. it all worked fine again.

This time I reset the camera but theres no change to the flashing ? mark on the screen. The camera is not receiving ttl info from the flash properly.

Can anyone give me an idea on what this problem might be and how to fix it?

    Thanks!

I never had a YN flash capable of TTL but I did have one that stopped working after a dozen or so shots. It would make a 'pop' kinda noise (as they usually do when they fire) but it didn't actually emit any light at all.

I figured the bulb was blown in it or something.

Not sure if I read your post right or not, but it could be the same (or similar?) issue? Is your flash firing at all?

Unfortunately, as is the nature of third party products, you can get some minor complications from time to time (though admittedly, with my Metz flashguns on my Canon camera, I never had any TTL issues).

Sorry if that's not very helpful.

The flash does fire alright but without any kind of information being passed to the camera. I can control the light level manually but the data attached to the photo shows that the camera hasnt used TTL in any way.

Oh okay. Re-read your OP and the only thing I can really think to do is try another flash on the body, or a different body on the flash. Obviously one of them is messing up somewhere along the way (presumably the flash gun).

I have heard that taking too many photos in a quick burst type situation can leave the YN flashes a little frazzled, in that they stop working because the flash tries to prevent itself from over-heating, and makes you wait a random period of time (usually a minute) before working again, but seen as yours is still firing manually, I'd assume that this is not the case.

That said, I've been firing the YN460-II (no TTL mode on that one) a little more than I thought was possible to and it's never frozen up on me, and I'd assume that the 467 is obviously an upgrade from the 460 (going by the numbers) so I'd imagine that problem was sorted out by then.

It's a strange one alright. It could just be a compatibility issue (obviously) but that wouldn't explain it working in the first place. Hmm.

Probably be an idea to leave the flash off overnight with no batteries in it and see if it magically cures itself the following morning? Sounds silly but sometimes such an approach can work wonders.

Believe it or not.. Doing just that seems to have me back in business!
    :D

    Thanks for the replies!

Yeah, YN flashes can be great, but they seem to be a little temperamental at times. Still though, hopefully you won't have any more issues with it. :)
