I live in a shared apt. I have no lock on my bedroom door. I feel I don't have the privacy I need regarding personal documents. Is there a document holder I could buy that locks? I think this is better than getting a lock put on the door as I will always have it.

    Tks

You can get small metal filing boxes that lock (albeit pretty flimsy locks) in most places that sell more than a handful of stationery. However, if you distrust your flatmates that much, you might be better off moving out or addressing the issue in some other way in the first instance.

You could always buy a briefcase with the 2 x number locks on top. Obviously it's not the most secure thing in the world, but if your objective is simply to put documents in it so they're out of view and not seen by any flatmates, it would do the job fine.

Have you asked your landlord to provide a lock on your door. If my tenant asked for this I don't think I would refuse seems like a fair request.

I will be moving over the summer. The landlord is not accommodation at all so I know he won't install a lock.

Why not get a safe deposit box at the bank? I keep all my personal documents, expensive jewelry and other non replaceable items in one. The prices range depending on the size of the box. I prefer keeping it locked up and in a safer place like the bank. Just don't lose the key as it costs a lot to replace as they have to drill into your box and replace the entire lock.

Those file cabinets are junk locks that anyone can break into. My eight year old nephew broke into my brother's! He was just playing around and was able to do it himself. There are some safety boxes that are more heavy duty. They are the ones you would find in a hotel. They sell them at some hardware shops. They are very reliable but they are heavy as hell and fireproof. They can be expensive but there are some that are reasonable and still good enough quality and hard to break into. I would use that over a file cabinet or briefcase. You can keep it under your bed or behind the closet. Keep in mind many are very heavy but they last a lifetime.

Or why not keep these items at your parents' place for now until you move-if it is at all possible?
