I've always wanted to buy a really good watch and now I finally have the cash to do it. I'm caught between two watches though. The first is the Tag Heuer Chronograph 1887 with the new in-house tag movement. The second is the Baume et Mercier Clarissma chonograph. The tag watch is advertised at 5300 australian dollars but in the shop they told me theyd do it for 4000. Does this sound like a good price? Also I dont know much about baume and mercier except that I like the watch. Are they considered a good brand? Appreciate any help guys as I dont know sh1t about watches except that I like nice ones! lol

not sure about the prices, but i love the 1887 carrera and its one of the few tags that will hold its value (in relative terms, but you will still lost about 30-40% if you goto sell)

I'd go for the Tag. If it were me I'd look for a used one given the level of depreciation with Tags.
If you do order from Australia, remember to factor in import taxes

I'm living in brisbane so no taxes :-)

I'm a novice at this, so I'm not in a position to give much advice.

You may want to read this:

    http://www.chronocentric.com/watches/brands.shtml

    I found it useful.

If I had to choose, I'd go for the Baume & Mercier: 2 reasons, I prefer the Baume styling, and i do like the contrast provided by the blue hands.

Maybe I'm wrong, but readability is important for me - the Baume gives it, the Tag doesn't.

Have fun choosing, and post pics when you buy!

For aesthetics the Baume et Mercier by a country mile.

It's also a little wrong to call Tags movement an inhouse movement, it's based on a seiko movement. I've no idea what the movement is inside the Baume et Mercier but it's a much nicer watch with many more fine details.

Yeah I do think the Baume et Mercier looks nicer. If I went for the tag, it would probably be just because it is a Tag which would help me justify spending 4 grand on a watch. Spending the same on a brand I never heard of before a few weeks ago is a little harder :-)

What's the discount like on the b&m?

If you ever decide to sell it it won't be pretty

If you think its a keeper then buy what's you like.
If you think your going to start chopping and changing a lot you need to think more of selling. Tag is a easier name to sell than baume. Although I have owned 3 and like them they are not as easy to move as a tag. Saying that discount and price should Be more competitive than tag. Don't overlook omega. Great watches that near always sell easy.

If your thinking about a Chrono from Tag I'd wait for the Jack Heuer (80th Birthday) one being released sometime in the summer. Nice than both you have shown by a country mile. :D

Here it is on a bracelet.

I'd also consider the Omega Speedmaster.

They are only making 3000 of those watches, they will cost a fortune. I want to spend max 4k..

The price tag is around 4k.

if you are looking for similar colors to the B&M but in a Tag try this

    Tag Heuer Carrera Heritage

    tag.jpg

Amazon are selling it for about €1750, not a bad price and you could still get a 2nd hand Omega PO aswell...

What does heritage mean with regard to tag watches?! Been looking and this one and it looks really good.
Also I would ordering from amazon.com as I'm in Oz. You think from a delivery point of view it would be safe ordering these online etc?

Heritage refers to the fact that they are a modern interpretation of older watches

If you are going for that one, go for all blue hands, it will look better

re ordering online, til you have it delivered to you, the risk is amazons so i wouldnt worry, but make sure you are aware of any import taxes that you may be liable for

Never mind, found it! Looks awesome. Think I've found the watch I want.

The one you linked is on alligator leather ?

Oh Ok, I just saw 'Brown Leather Strap with Alligator Pattern' which I thought it meant it was just standard leather...

I reckon I'll go for this one. My only concern is its sold through amazon for a seller called shingle. Does that mean that if it turned out to be a fake amazon would just say its the sellers fault or do they take responsibility?

Im not sure on that point, is there any feedback for the seller, maybe contact amazon and check?

On the strap point, if its available on a bracelet, buy the version on the bracelet so you have it, a nice alligator strap will cost around 100 euro (after market), the bracelet will cost you 600-750 if you decide later on that you want it :)

Oh right, Cheers for the advice mate.
One more question. I can't see this exact one on the tag website. I can see the watch but not the blue handels, brown strap. Do tag just not put these heritage ones on the site?! Or has someone taken the navy strap off and put on a brown one?

if you buy one in a store youd have an option, id imagine it normally comes on navy, but would be sold on brown too

    its a beauty,

just a thought...is it worth paying the extra couple of grand for the Chrono?

Like I mentioned, you could buy the one I linked to and buy a used Omega Planet Ocean

now that would be a great selection to have

bear in mind its my 0.02 cents worth

    Hmm.,,,
Well the one you posted was £1379 sterling which is $2202 Australian dollars. This one is 3275 american which works out at 3357 Australian. So its about 1150 difference. I'm only going to buy one watch either way as thats all I want...
I much prefer the face on the one I posted (i know they are quite similar) and I wouldn't have to go buying a brown strap for it afterwards...

Its a hard decision but if its the only watch im going to buy for quite sometime I might aswell go for the chrono and do it properly....I will need to look into customs for bringing it from usa into oz...

    I've never used Prestigetime.com, but i believe they're Legit -

they have the Bracelet version for US$3130, which i think is a great price, allowing you to get a Croc strap yourself

again as it's US, you may get stung for customs etc

    watch is here http://www.prestigetime.com/item/Tag-Heuer/Carrera-Calibre-16-Heritage-Automatic-Chronograph/cas2111.ba0730.html

After clicking that link to the heritage Tag, I can't open a webpage without an add to buy it on the Amazon store.......might be time to clear out the cookies, it's a bit scary though
