Simple car insurance question

My sister recently upgraded her car to a newer model. She transferred the insurance from her previous car (a Fiesta) to her newer car. I need a car for a month until another car that I'm looking to buy becomes available. In the meantime she said that I can drive the Fiesta so long as I sort out insurance for it.

I tried getting a quote from NoNonsense.ie but they refused to quote me as the car is still registered in her name. So my question is this, is it possible for me to get insurance as the main driver on a car that I do not own?

I don't think its possible, I'd say your best bet is to ring a few brokers. With her permission of course though, its not that hard to transfer ownership and then transfer it back.

Emm what insurers even ask you who the car belongs too?

Afraid not. No insurer will insure you as the main driver if you do not own the vehicle. (you have to have insurable interest)

    Hiya,
Yeah as the person above mentioned you could get her to put the log book into your name, only thing there is that she'll have another owner on the book. Try liberty insurance (former Quinn direct) for a quote I've always got good deals with them. Hope it all works out well for you!

Have you a policy in your own name at the moment? if so just do a temp change onto the Fiesta

Aren't legal ownership and having the car in your name two different things, though?

I don't think so, if the logbook has your name on it, you're legal owner. Thats my understanding of it.

Just don't tell them the car is not in your name.

I know its not exactly above board but there is a seriously low chance of anything happening to it in a month. And if anything does happen that you need to claim then get your sister to fill out the change of ownership form and back date it to when you start driving her car. Then when you get your own car in a month or so just transfer your insurance to that.

You're right. It's not above board. It's insurance fraud. If he says it's his and its not, the policy is null and void from inception.

I believe the reason that this is not possible is because of incidents while the car is unattended. For example, if the handbrake fails and the car rolls into somebody, the car's owner is liable (and not the person who parked it). So even if you have 3rd party only insurance on the car, this will not cover such incidents meaning that the car is effectively uninsured in a public place.

The simplest thing to do is to sign the car into your name now. There's no need to sign it back to your sister when she's selling it unless she plans on driving it.
