    Hi All
Simple question for someone half decent with computers. How Do I stop
program icons been highlighted in the start up menu? i.e at the bottom right corner of the screen in that bar? I've about 10 down there and it must be some of the reason why the pc is so slow to get goin?

    Cheers

Start - Run - Type msconfig - hit enter and then the Startup tab, you can remove entries there.

I'd recommend using Ccleaner instead though. It'll give you a better list of what's starting and what you can remove completely.

Also take a look at StartupDelayer - allows you to easily stop programmes from running on boot, or you can just delay them so your system will boot quicker.

(personally I prefer stopping all the usual 'updater' and 'helper' tasks etc. from running - you can always put them back in to starting on boot if needed).

Be sure to only stop the items you know are not system related as you may prevent your system from starting correctly altogether.

used msconfig and also used ccleaner. Improved a bit but still hear the grinding noise on start up. Still slow enough. What about scanning defragmenting? I have a fair amount of icons on desktop but they are not taking up much spave. most are shortcuts

Ok "grinding noise" isn't good. It could be the hdd on its way out. See if you can get some hardware diagnostic\benchmarking tools and run those.

Ultimate boot cd might help here.

Hey I'm replying to this thread (instead of pm) just to bump it in case anyone has any other ideas. (I'll pm you too).

But in the case of the boot cd, I can't really give any advice or take responsibility for what you do. I just know there are tools on it that might help pin point the problem

If you wanted to know more about it there are faq's and tutorials on the official page.

Apologies for being so vague but it's hard to diagnose a problem without being physically at the pc.
