This is the end of an era. As many of you know, Máire MacSwiney was the daughter of no less than Terence MacSwiney. She spent much of her childhood in Germany with her mother Muriel Murphy MacSwiney of the Murphy brewing family. In the early 1930s, at 14 years of age, she "escaped" back to Ireland with her Cumann na mBan aunt Máire MacSwiney. In 1945 she married Ruairí Brugha, the son of none other than Cathal Brugha. Ruairí, who had been an IRA volunteer, a Fianna Fáil TD and MEP, died in 2006.

Máire died last Sunday, aged 93, in Dublin. Her funeral will be tomorrow, Thursday morning, in Mount Merrion at 11.30 and she will be buried afterwards in Glasnevin Cemetery. Her autobiography History's Daughter was published in 2005. Máire MacSwiney Brugha.

A good read, they should republish it.
