Choosing an MPV. Opel or VAG?

Hi I'm in market for a MPV. I will have 3 children, a 4.5 year old, 2 year old and a new born.

I am looking at 2008 Opel Zafiri 1.9 CDTi or (coz I love VAGs), a 2006/2007 VW Touran 1.9TDi.

Any thoughts on above models in terms of:
    1. Space for Three kids
    2. reliability
    3. Fuel Economy

We've had two zafira's 02 and 05. Personally I think they're good cars. The two seats in the back are handy, although a bit small for adults, with kids they're fine. Reliability wise, we've never had a problem. And fuel wise it's not too thirsty.

God, I sound like an Opel salesman!!! They're good, solid cars though.

Edit: Ours were both 1.6 petrol, no experience with the diesel engine, or the new model.

i think the Zafira wins for speed
The VW for the more simple engine
The VW for image (if that's even possible)

While the interior of the Touran is pretty grim, the whole car is a bit classier.

The Touran doesn't have a spare wheel. not sure about the Zaf.

i don't think there'd be a whole lot between them economy wise.

I'd have a Toyota Corolla Verso 2.2 over either of them though, the last of the Luna models had great spec. they have individual middle row seats and access into the back row is easier than on either the VW or opel, it also has a spare wheel that can be accessed with the seats up or down.

Just a point to note, these type MPVs might have 7 seats but the third row usually takes up the boot. With 3 young kids you may find it hard to transport them and the stuff that goes with them in these MPVs. Make sure to test them out before buying.

A Galaxy, Sharan or Alhambra maybe a better option imo but I would not limit myself to just Opel or VAG either.

Wouldn't the Toyota be prone to head gasket and other failures, the 2.2 diesel is hardly their finest hour?

Buying an MPV with three kids and a dog in 2008, I thought the Zafira and Touran were a bit tight on space. I got an S-Max. A good bit dearer, but real room, and a better drive.

Pals low mileage, main dealer Zafira (2007 1.6, 30K) has had endless overheating problems, just had a new engine fitted. VERY stiff gearshift, something wrong there too but dealer found nothing.

The worst thing is I helped them find it!

Far as I know that problem is mainly on the 177HP version, I wouldn't be that worried about the 135 version
