Water Intake whilst running

    I see here that people say you dont need to carry water unless you go on a long run. I run 5km but always get a very dry throat, during my run and always find myself needing to have a sips if water. I dont need much water but just enough to wet the back of my throat. Does anyone else find this? I see quite a few people running but very few seem to carry water.

    Try drinking coconut water before you run. Its the best sports drink you can get. Its packed full of postassium and electrolytes.
    Dioralyte is good too.

    Have you tried drinking a glass of water BEFORE you go running?

    Whats your fluid intake like throughout the rest of the day?

    Do you drink alot of coffee?

    As Tunguska mentioned Dioralyte is a great one which I use regularly enough when I slip up with my fluid intake in a day (or my coffee intake is through the roof for the day before training:D)

    In fairness, i do drink quite a lot of water during the day (whether i am going for a run or not) As for coffee, i rarely touch it, one cup a year i would say!!

    Yeah i have tried drinking water before i go for a run also.

    For 5 k, which should take the average person 22-30 mins, I don't see the need for water if you are hydrated to begin with.

    I drink water out of boredom at work (bottle on the desk to stop me from snacking), and generally put away 2-3L during the working day.

    I doubt there is a black and white answer tbh.
    Remember you also get water from lots of foods (fruit and veg etc) as well as other drinks (juice, tea, milk).
    The important thing is just to check your hydration levels, your urine should be clear or light straw coloured. If it's darker than this you need to drink more.

    I think people are missing the point.The OP says he gets a dry throat.I dont imagine its a hydration problem:confused: Maybe you can try sucking a sweet or something?

    From reading your other posts I presume that you are new enough to running. When I started running first, I had to carry water or do loops so I would come back to the house a few times. Even running a 5K without water seemed like forever.Even training for DCM last year after 2K I would have to stop to catch my breath. I used a camelpack with 2 liters of water (and I would drink it) for distances now that I don't need any water. Slowing down was the solution.     Drink if you're thirsty. Don't bother if you're not. That's the black and white answer.

    Forget about target amounts, or glasses of water per day, or looking at your urine, or worrying about being hydrated or dehydrated.

    Best answer. People a lot of the time get too hunh up on amounts and overcompensate, which can be more harmful than helpful. Obey your thirst is the key.

    Research says about .5 litres of fluid per hr of running. Overdoing it can cramp the runner.
