Right I've had it with wireless, and I need help finding a suitable alternative.

from what I gather, there are 2 standards, home plug and power line. I can't find any decent comparison for gaming, so I'll play it by experience.

I also want to get as close to my 100mb speed as possible, cause why not, so I'm looking at 200mbps or faster variations.

no real budget, so any suggestions?

Nothing beats old school. http://www.ebay.ie/sch/Cables-Connectors-/31491/i.html?_nkw=DSL+cable&_catref=1&_fln=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282. I've got it running threw the attic out into my PC.

god I wish. I've already got a 30m cable anyway.

problem is that router is upstairs and I can't drill in the walls.

I'm using Devolo dLan AvMINI homeplugs at the moment (200mbps) and they're great. Got them for €45 euro in PC World on offer. They're €105 now, so maybe try amazon or something.

You might not need to Tea_bag, drilling required could only be as little as a 6/8mm hole through the floor and ceiling underneath-easily patched up afterwards. you can get small, as in big enough for a Cat cable only mini trunking that can be stuck to the wall and when removed properly causes no damage to paint.

Running Cat 6 with proper jacks each end (and proper patch leads) will give you a proper gigabit link.

What I'm saying is its a lot more straightforward than you'd think, If you want I can give a look at it for you next time I'm down that way.

Edit: also much cheaper and more reliable as well obviously.

Never used them myself now, but Tp link's powerline adapters look decent!
    200 Mbps
    500 Mbps

I can personally recommend TP-Link PA211, have had them for a while, realiable with no disconnects or resets. I use them for a media server and player because my wifi has a habit of cutting out during a film when a new client joins and it needs to change from g to n or vice versa.

But if you are not in a rush I would wait for PA411.

They're 500Mbps like the PA511 but a new chipset so they use less power. Cheaper too.

I'd say go for the 500Mbps too. They're not ridiculously more expensive. The 200Mbps ones won't usually give you anywhere close to 200Mbps. I think it's actually 100Mbps each way. Then there's overheads and degradation so realistically you could be looking at less than 10MB/s... maybe 5MB/s.

Just had a look, the floor I need to drill through is 40cm thick, and it'll be messy. I'm going to wait for those new ones to come out. £40 isn't allot if its decent, cause I can carry them around forever.

I was in the same boat, although the specifics of mine was a mother who despised drilling and holes in walls.

I got a friend over who specialises in networking and does global projects for a large company, so rigging my house was to be a piece of cake, and we were going to use the "home plugs".

Problem is they need to run on the same breakers. And in most modern homes, the upstairs and downstairs powerlines are actually on seperate breakers, so that ruled it out.

We tried it anyway, got a little workaround going but the speeds were pretty piss.

So the mother went away on her girly trip for a week and I took two days of work and got drilling

Still doesn't know I did it, and that was last year ;)

In all honesty, cables are really the only way, I'm on the UPC 100mb package and get at worst 96mbps to my machine, with my dads getting the full 100mbps.

Also if you are with UPC, they can do a router relocation for €20.

My router was downstairs in the front room by the television where the package was. They came and basically split off, running cabling outside to the upstairs boxroom and then I was able to run cables through the attic.

€20 they charged and it was a really proffesionally done job, I can attest to that cause as with my drilling, the mother still doesnt know the box was relocated.

If your UPC might be worth giving them a call, see if its still €20 and get some information on what they can do. Afaik the call out for the installation guy to survery was free, and he said it was straight forward and that he could be back in the afternoon and it was all done.

My upstairs and downstairs sockets are on different breakers and homeplugs work fine, I don't see any major speed difference across floors.

Its the newer AFCI breakers they have a problem with afaik.

With distance selling regulations you can always give them a shot and if the speeds are no good, send them back for the cost of return postage.

    Are yours recent?

I got a refund for mine alright yeah, this was last year I was trying this out so maybe more recent ones are working accross breakers?

The ones I have are recent models from last year, but the standard itself is Homeplug AV which has been around for a fair few years. The data comes over the neutral as far as I know.

7 day shop have a special on 200mbps homeplugs at the moment, £32 I think. I get about 20mbps out odd mine across 3 floors (and breakers).

On my phone so no link, but I think it's on their front page, or maybe specials page?

Instead of drilling inside, could you drill out, go up and then back in again maybe through window frames?
