Got a text this morning to say my disability allowance claim has been received and is currently been reviewed.

I hear that it's never granted first time around and that an appeal can be launched.

How do I go about launching an appeal if it's not accepted?

How long until i hear back from them once they are reviewing my claim? It took over 9 weeks for them to review it(which is normal) I understand.

I lodged my application in Feb and still waiting... I phoned them and they said that the average wait period is 17 weeks!

Don't panic about the appeal thing til you need to!

17 weeks!! Ok, I don't feel as bad for having to wait as long as I did now.

Not trying to answer another person's question, just wanted to put my two cents (now I have more than one, haha) in here. I applied in November 2009, was denied in July 2010, and approved after submitting more evidence, in November 2010. In the mean time I wasn't entitled to anything at all. I was cohabiting with my partner in full time work which meant no supplementary allowance, nothing. My mother had to give us money every month to make ends meet. I was lucky, with the inspector who called out to review my case, that she didn't count my mother's gifts as income and I was eventually approved for a reduced amount based on partner's earnings.

Because he had a full time job we were not entitled to any relief, although when it was granted I was getting 120 a week. We basically lived 500 euro per month short of what social welfare deems acceptable levels, for a year.

I was on SWA, but in September of last year, just after submitting new claim, the CWO was not a happy camper. He told me SWA is only a short term payment, and he would only pay me if I agreed to make no other claims off of him, ie, exceptional needs or whatever and would only pay me until the decision came through, and would not pay me if I had to appeal again. He wrote this out in longhand, I had to sign and was not given a copy.

sam did you stick to that agreement ? I've got a claim for DA going through and although was on it before, I did the BTWEA scheme which has now ended. I'm getting SWA at the moment and the yellow card my CWO gave me is only dated to Oct this year. She said i wouldn't get DA, but it's not her descision. I complained to the complaints dept in Sligo, got my money backdated (wish had it now !) and the reasons she said what she did explained. (basically she said she didn't want me to get dispondant if I get refused etc)
