Mk3 Golf Suspension Problem with Pics

    Hi Guys,
    This issue reared its ugly head on sunday when I was out for a drive. I heard a loud knocking in the boot when I went over a speed bump (slowly). Its the right suspension top strut in the boot.
    The first pic is the suspension strut in normal position with the car on the ground.
    The second pic is when I was pushing the car down by standing on the boot ledge.
    As you can see the top strut rises up when the car is pushed down. (this was hitting the boot trim and making the noise)
    The nut and center rod/bolt turns with very little pressure from a spanner.

    I haven't a clue whats wrong so help would be really appreciated.

    There is a washer that sits between the spring top plate and the top of the shock absorber to prevent the shock absorber from doing what it is doing in your case.

    Either this washer has rusted away or else the spring top plate has rusted away, or else someone left out the washer when working on the rear suspension.

    I have had the car 4 years and this just happened, the left side is perfect with no movement.

    Is this a difficult issue to fix????

    No not difficult to fix. Remove the shock absorber, see what is wrong and replace either the washer, the top plate or both.

    got it sorted. The top mount broke.
    I got another shock and fitted it myself, i'm well chuffed.
