2.5" HDD for laptop

Need to replace a HDD on a dell 1520 as I say it's goosed. Can't get into recovery, safe mode or even re-install windows. When I ran diagnostics it started beeping with an error code 0146.

The current HDD is this one here which is an ATA-100 and I'm just wondering would this one work? (SATA-300)

The ATA-100 is the only one on komplett and is only 160GB so was hoping to get something bigger

    Thanks

The new one is not compatible

This one is compatible here, you need an PATA or IDE drive as the connection interface is different than SATA.

They are not as popular any more and tend to be a bit more expensive than SATA.

Pity they're so small and not much selection. Thanks again

They don't make new ones any more, they just keep making small quantities of whatever their last models were in about 2008-2009.

That's why capacity is so low, they are stuck making old models.

The largest one on the market is WD3200BEVE 320GB. Expensive though.

If the laptop is so old as to be using a PATA HD you may be better off just getting a new machine, SATA has been the standard for a good few years now so I'm guessing that machine is around 04/05 or before era

It's a dell 1520 so yeah a few years old I say. Not mine though, just fixing it for someone else. Thanks

scan.co.uk have been a total disaster. I'm still waiting on a 2 day delivery order by them (ordered 23rd May). Got an email from them last week saying they can't find me and asked for my postcode rolleyes.gif. I'm not in too much of a panic but I just got an order from buyincoins (Hong Kong) that I ordered a few days ago. smile.gif

I might make a new thread if I don't get any replies here, but I got this from buyincoins specifically to plug my 500GB Passport HDD into to plug into my tablet. The HDD just beeps and doesn't show up. All my ac powered HDD's work.

Any suggestions why this is so at all?

Was the drive in stock? Scan are usually quick on the delivery (I have contacted them before regarding the postcode issue to which I was told they'd look into it months back...). I have noticed they changed from UPS to DPD with my last order, I wonder could this be the reason?
No clue about your other issue, only thing I can think of is the drive isn't receiving adequate power, could be due to the hub (although it is powered so that should be sufficient, I'm assuming you plugged the hub in) or even the tablet, does the drive work if you plug it into the tablet directly?

Think you're right about DPD being the issue. Looked at the tracking and it says it was out for delivery but they could not locate address. When I emailed scan.co.uk they passed on my mobile number and more specific directions onto DPD last week but would have though they would have attempted another delivery today but heard nothing from them.

I think the wd passport drive isn't getting enough power from the hub which is strange as it's AC powered. Looked at the plug of the hub and it's says it's output is 5.0V 1000mA. Must look up what the passport needs.

The reason I got the hub is because the tablet (SGT10.1) won't read non-powered hdd and heard an ac powered hub may help.

Are you sure it's IDE? The Dell 1520 is a SATA interface (PM965/Intel ICH8M).

iirc it was made around the time of the transition from IDE to SATA, so the internal HDD should be SATA but the DVD/CD drive may still be IDE, so that might be where the confusion lies if you are seeing IDE in the BIOS?

have you tried removing the old HDD to confirm 100% one way or another?

Looking at that laptop here it seems to be relatively recent (came out the same time as Vista did) so I'd be very suprised if it wasn't SATA. Also most bios may have an option such as IDE mode/Legacy mode. Dont confuse this as having a IDE/PATA drive. I think you have a SATA drive OP, when you receive the drive do not open it until you confirm it is a PATA/not SATA connector (take out old drive and see). If its a mistake send back the pata drive and order a sata one.

    Edit: Differences:
    2.5" PATA/IDE:

    2.5" SATA:

Are you sure its not a SATA 100 drive that was in the Dell (Not ATA?)

It's a SATA alright so the one I ordered off SCAN is probably wrong?

Yep, don't open the one from Scan, arrange to send it back straight away. This will do fine in replacement

I haven't even received it yet so I have sent off an email to cancel. TBH I don't want to order from them again.

Would this one do too as it's a SATA as well? Is there also a difference between the SATA II, SATA-300, etc.

Same drive here cheaper & free delivery (based in Kildare).
SATA 2 and 3 are faster, but doesn't matter as SATA 3 drives are backwards compatable with 100 controllers
