    Hi Guys,
Looking for a bit of advice I bought a ford foucus c-max 1.6tcdi with 128miles in the middle of december and the garage i bought of gave me a three month warranty. There a 134 on the clock now.

My problem is the other day i was driving home and i caught an awful smell of gas inside the car. I thought nothing of it till i got home thinking it was the car in front of me. When i got home the smell of gas was all around the car. I open the front of the car to see if i could see anything on the engine block. The smell was coming from the left side of the enigne. At first my dad thought there might be a seal gone on the drive shaft then he though it might be the cat contervotor. We sent it to a mechanie yesterday first he said that there a leak in the coolant or a sealed unit and that he was going to take and put it up on a ramp and he get back to me. He got to me four hours later saying the Turbo is on the way out saying that is the reason for the smell of gas. It makes no sense why this would be causing the smell.

My questions are these if the turbo is on the way out and its five months since i bought the car would the garage be obilged to repair it or will i have pay for it myself even thought the car has full service history.

The second question could the mechanie be right in saying that the turbo is on the way out.

And third the mechaine claims that the enigne is a peagout enigne in the ford does this mean i have any leg to stand on with the garage considering i thought i was buying a Ford.

    Thanks

You wont get anywhere with that i wouldnt imagine being 2 months out of a 3 month warranty. These things happen im afraid. Same engine in ford, citroen and peugeot. The 2nd two just call it HDI

He means that Ford make the car with an engine designed by Peugeot. Not that the original was swapped for one.

Well spending thousands of your own money without some basic research is the first mistake.

In 12 years as a mechanic(mechanie, mechaine?:P) I've never smelled anything on a car that smelled the same as gas.

But with regards to warranty, it's out of what the garage gave you and its also got 134k on it...and its an engine known for turbo issues(again research) so your on your own I'd say.

Im giessing he said the smell of gas because thats how you discribbed it to him. Iv never got a smell of gas off a car. Ask him exactly what is wrong with the turbo

They are known for turbo issues and with that mileage at time of purchase if it hadnt been done already id have looked elswhere

car had full service history from for up to 125 miles so sure enough ford would of done it at some point he claims the turbo is going and the smell is whirl around the turbo and back into the car are around the car

They wouldnt of done it if it was not giving trouble, turbos are not things that are replaced at a certain time or mileage.

I recon your on your own mate and to be fair the garage would be right not to cover it. If they are not far from you tho maybe ask them for a quote and they might look after you on the price considering you bought the car there, id always try do something like this for my customers down the line even on small jobs

You're on your own. As others have said the engine was not swapped. The mechanic was pointing out to you that it's a Peugeot designed engine. These are known for turbo issues.

It's well out of warranty and the dealer won't be interested.

Now on to the slightly better news for you. Get a price on a new turbo, then ring the ford dealer up North. My father saved a few hundred euro by getting his turbo from the dealer in Enniskillen.

You e been told by a garage that it is the turbo and these cars are known to have turbo issues which has been said by a few posters, id have to assume that yes it could be the turbo!

The turbo could certainly be at fault of course, but there won't be any smell of gas from a turbo, or any component of a car so we have to presume that's an inaccurate description.

And without an accurate description then no-one here will be able to give suggestions of what may be your problem.

If you feel that you don't trust the opinion of your mechanic then the obvious thing is to bring it to a different one.

    Air-con?

A/c gas would smell like a gas obviously, but it doesn't smell anything like the gas that the general public would be familiar with.

Could the op possibly mean gas in the American sense I.e. pettheroll?

If the turbo was on it's way out, could there be a burning smell from bearings?
