    Hi all,

Before I detail my issue can I just mention a few things so I don't get blasted, I have gone through as best I can as many threads as possible looking for an answer but have had no joy and I also tried to place this in the right section also!...and also FYI I am totally new to anything Satellite/Terrestrial and rarely watch or use TV...

I recently moved to Charlesland in Greystones, where the owner of the house I am renting is fully kitted out with a fully functioning dish...as not a regular tv watcher yet quite keen to be able to watch the Euros and Olympics I decided after doing a bit of reading on this that a Triax TSC114 Saorview would be a good option for once off viewing....anyway long story short, I hooked it all up last night and it has located and stored what seems to be every channel possible (over 300) EXCEPT for any of the Irish channels. Having read some more on this I saw that the Irish channels are not satellite and are terrestrial and would require an aerial. Does this mean I am completely ruled out of getting Irish channels with what I have so far and need to get an aerial? I would not be allowed to put one on the roof and to be honest couldnt be arsed with that craic. There isnt a single aerial on any of the houses in the entire estate either and I wouldve thought there would be at least some Triax TSC114 users there wanting Irish channels so is there anyway possible to do this without an aerial...

If anyone has any advice or info it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Muff.

If the Saorview signal is strong enough in your area then you should be able to pick up the channels with an indoor aerial that would simply sit beside your TV.

Check likes of Argos for a decent quality one, and at least that way you can return it if it doesn't work.

Having said that, if you are getting satellite channels ok then you will be getting BBC and ITV, and that should suffice to see most of the Euros and the Olympics.

thanks Niman, 2 questions if you wouldn't mind i had a look at Argos, is there any particular aerial you could recommend trying? also how do you know the saorview strength from the other ones? I saw when it was tuning it said 54% strength but I don't know if that's good or bad, I guess 54% means 54% though!

i did think it would be quite good with the English channels I have but you know how it is especially with the Olympics they will concentrate on Irish athletes and interests a bit more so thats why I was more interested in getting them.

    Thanks for the info.

Did you have an aerial attached when you were getting 54% ss? Is there a signal quality reading also, probably a more important measurement? From my experience the signal quality reading should be in the mid to hi 90's for stable reception (how accurately the receiver measures ss and sq is another question of course).

See this site for suggested indoor aerials - http://www.techtir.ie/radio-tv/uhf-aerials, also these recent threads - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=78701323#post78701323, http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056646553

I had one of these plugged in to the Triax box

    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/9030727/Trail/searchtext%3EAERIAL+.htm

I bought it hoping to be able to pick up some kind of signal initially. It didn't work or I was doing something wrong. I'd be concerned as I read on one of the threads you sent that if one aerial doesn't work its unlikely another brand or type will make any difference.

I dont really recall the details other than the strength was coming up at 53/54% but I did see at one point when I plugged it in initially it was up at 90 something.

Would I need to tune the Irish channels in manually using specific channels and frequencies? I was reading that it might not be down to auto search for getting Irish channels.

You could try moving the indoor aerial around the room and check if it makes any difference but the probable reason is that Saorview signal strength/quality isn't good enough inside your house.

Where are you located, what is your nearest Saorview transmitter and how far away is it? Use the Saorview coverage checker.

The mast for Greystones is very close to you. It's located on the hill over Lidl Greystones.

You need to point North West from Charles land. The aerial needs to be VERTICAL rather than the normal horizontal.

The one you linked to from Argos does not look to be the best type. However I would recommend moving the TV and portable aerial outside to the garden or whatever, where you have a clear view north west (or upstairs) then rescanning for terrestrial channels. Many modern houses have windows that block the signal so try in the garden.

Once you get it tuned in and working, you can try moving it to wherever works.

The signal should be VERY strong in Charlesland. The mast is only a mile or so away.

If ur really stuck I could loan you something to test. I live nearby. PM me.

Just wanted to say thanks very much for all the information by all of you.

    Its been a great help.

Unfortunately where I am located (house) is fine but the indoor aerials are no use within the living room where the TV is placed. We aren't really permitted to stick up aerials and the attic job would be too messy and would be an issue regarding drilling etc as we are just renting. Looks like we may have to go UPC or Sky! Just wanted to say the Triax box looks great and is a shame, its features are great and it picked up all the channels easily and its a good selection, just missing the Irish ones which is all we wanted.

Anyway, thanks again to all of you, the time you took to write and give information is really very much appreciated.
