Sorry I can't offer any advice because I haven't been yet but I just want to let you know I am very very jealous!

Seems you got all the 'essentials' in. I didn't like Phuket, but it's usually just a stopover anyway on your way somewhere else. You'll find more places when you're there and hear about places others are going that you want to go to. So as long as you're flexible you'll see all there is to see. Chiang Mai is a strange place, those 'hill tribes' are very set up. Don't go spending a lot of money seeing 'authentic tribal people'. It's all a big tourist trap. Other than that it's a great place!

Still can't understand why so many people like Chiang Mai. Did I miss something? I went to an elephant sanctuary there but outside of that, what's there to do there?

I know there are elephant treks but anyone in their right mind wouldn't support such blatant cruelty.

So what else do people do there?

There is LOADS to do in Chiang mai. Cooking courses, massage courses, meditation courses, jungle treking (without elephants), zip lining through the jungle, white water rafting, bamboo rafting, loads of temples to visit, the night bazaar, the sunday market. Chiang mai would keep you busy for ages!
