    Hi,

My sons 2006 Trek 6500 mtb headset started to get rough - so took it apart today. Threadless with 1 1/8" ball cages -like these
The bottom one is gone so I'll replace both, now that I have it apart.

But the bottom crown race is also rough - but cannot seem to find a replacement. This one states for XC headset !!!
Do I have to replace the ball cages & crown with similar or can something like this work also.
Am also having trouble sourcing the o-ring (front of pic) which retained the cage & crown. Same here ?

    any help is great.

    K

I've had trouble with similar. Personally I'd get a BBB one in the LBS and fit that. You'll need to make sure you have the diameter right, some of the Trek ones are "oversized" for a 44mm bore head tube.

Why dont you just fit a whole new headset? With out looking up the spec of the bike but also going by the age of it I would presume its a standard external cup 1 1/8" headset but I could be wrong.

    Yes - you are correct.
I just thought it would be cheaper to put new bearings in.

The cups are more than likely pitted (if only slightly) any way, you can pick up a cheap headset for about a tenner but some thing with cartridge bearings would last a bit longer and would only set you back about twenty eurons!
