This may be an option for some and is considerably cheaper than membership. For E290 you get unlimited golf for 1 year.
Knockanally went into receivership a couple of years ago and has been taken over by the members. I played it 6 weeks ago and it was in the best condition I have ever seen it. For someone living down that neck of the woods it's a pretty attractive offer.

Haven't been there in ages but it was my favourite on the society tour back in the nineties, course is great fun with some quirky holes. The crowning glory is the clubhouse, paladian mansion, interesting frescos in the changing rooms. Every time we went there we finished in the visitors' bar and were invited into the members' bar, lovely snacks, nice comfy seats and the most pleasant and accommodating bunch of members and staff you could hope to meet. The owner (Lyons?) is/was a nice fella too.

I agree heavyballs. Very atmospheric place- the old clubhouse set on a height with a view of the course and surrounding countryside just gives a nice feel to the place. I first played golf there 12 years ago and have never come across as friendly a bunch of members anywhere and I must have played over 100 tracks at this stage. Apart from that it's a bloody good test of golf. One of the most under-rated courses around in my opinion.

Totally 100% agree, i have join as a green fee member. The course is in fantastic condition at the moment and find myself going back there every week, the front nine can hold a lot of water in the winter but otherwise as mentioned, one of the most under rated around. Amazing value and a good atmosphere there all year round. :D
