i'm getting a new kitchen and have taken off the old tiles from the walls but was wondering whats the best way to get off the old adhesive? would a sander smooth it out? wasn't planning to re-tile as the new kitchen has an upstand off the counter, so just want the walls smooth enough to paint.

You will need to remove as much as you can by any means possible and then reskim to get it looking good.

I found using a steam stripper and scraper and it flys off wall...Or use hot water applying with brush if you dont have steam stripper.
