Recently, my son bought himself a wee corsa. he paid 600 euro along with his old corsa for it. the seller rang him a few days ago saying that my son still owed him money, although the young lad had paid in full. he went out of his flat yesterday to find the car gone, and a note through his door telling him to ring a number if he wants his car back. the seller still has my sons old car, and the registration hasn't been transferred on either car yet. unfortuneatley my son being the exciteable little toad that he is, did not obtain any reciepts for the money he payed.

where does he stand here??? any advice appreciated...

Did he pay for it in full?

Go to the guards, he still has a car in his name and somebody else is in possession of it

That may get him his old car back, but what about the €600? (I'm guessing he paid cash) Still, there's not much else to be done.

thats what i told him to do. he thinks the law will not be any good to him as he can't prove he paid the money.

This is why you need a witness and a receipt even though most people will say a receipt is pointless, buyer beware

Bit suspicious that the seller still had a key

I assume your son rang the number to ask where his vehicle that he had paid for in full was?

Don't take this the wrong way, but are you quite sure you're hearing this 100% as it happened?

Has the previous owner still got the log book ? if not then report the car stolen. If so phone up the previous owner and agree to pay the 100 euro and get the log book and post it and get a receipt.
Then get his old car back if he has a key and well say you want 100 :D

Is there any possible way there might have been some sort of a genuine misunderstanding?

Would a call to the Gardai not help? I am sure your son has the car insured and the VLC off the car has been signed? After all the car has been stolen. Maybe call the seller bluff and tell them your reporting the car stolen, it might turn up then. You have there ransom note..

i'd report it to the Gards....smacks of extortion and is almost certainly theft...if the guy isnt happy, he should return the old car and whatever cash is paid so far.

Definitely go to the Gardai. I bet the first thing they'll be wondering is why some random dude has your son's (old) car. There'll be some explaining in that.

Secondly, maybe the seller has a history of pulling this crap and the Gardai will see right through him.

Finally, if there is more to this story than your son is letting on, I'm sure the involvement of the Gardai may encourage him to elaborate...
