The gearbox in my car is going to have to be re conditioned and the mechanic reckons it will cost €700 to get it done. This seems very expensive.

Depends on the car and type of gearbox tbh i have heard of larger auto jeeps and the like costing up to 3 grand, you should get a 12 month warrenty for any repairs at that price though

It's a TDI Golf. I was asking him would it be cheaper to get a second hand gearbox but he said it was more risky as you don't really know what you are getting and if it will last long term.

€700 sounds about right tbh. Removing and refitting extra I presume? Those Golf boxes can be a bit of a sod to get in and out. A mate came over with his 1.4 with a busted box and I still have nightmares about the extraction/replacement, it seemed like VW designed the box to just clear the wheelarch etc without dropping the engine half a mile. If thats €700 fitted, thats a pretty good price for a recon box(maybe too good?)

Based on what? I recon its about right and he is spot on about buying second hand ones.

With regards to the Golf boxes being hard to remove, maybe I'm speaking from a different perspective but they are one of the easiest boxes to remove.

I was only asking peoples opinion because I didn't know how much it cost as it never happened to me before. I wasn't cribbing about it, just got a bit of a shock when I heard the price that's all.
