There are a lot of websites out there you can buy themes from,

Do any of them allow you to test/trial the theme on your site to see if its what you want before you buy it?

    Doubt it..

.. am guessing that's why the majority have a 'Live Preview' / 'Demo Site' functionality.

What do you need to test? Every possibility is shown in live preview.

    You can always use firebug

    not exactly a test,
trying to avoid a situation such as,
you buy and apply the theme and the site owner decides they dont actually like it!

Templatic let you test all of their themes for a month. :)

EDIT: You can't use plugins on their test site though (because they set the site up for you on a test.templatic.com/yourtestsite, so you can't use premium options). That said, it's still a great way to see if you'd like to use their theme/s.

If you're using a template, clients should know about it, for all the legal rights.
They are ways around it - create the template in PSD and ask the clients if they are happy with it.

If you pay for the template and / or abide by it's license, is there any reason for the clients to know it's a template?

What will happen when client sees the same looking website elsewhere? They hired you to develop a website, if they wanted a template, it would be bought and somebody hired to modify it ;)

Not looking for a big legal debate! Just some helpful advice!

Did a simple wordpress install for someone,
they are wanting to install their own theme and build their own site,
they were curious about actually looking at their site with the theme on it before they decided to buy it was all!!!

Yes, so they're not under the mistaken impression they're getting a bespoke design.

While there's no obligation on your part to tell them, you should, if they find out at a later date their one-off site is no such thing, and they paid a premium price for it, they won't be happy.

And also that they do not own the copyright to the design, just a licence to use it.

Maybe you could go to the Live Preview site, save the html/css etc for one or two pages and change the content for the client to have a rough idea how it looks.

Is this not the point of the live preview? You show them, if they like it you install it for them.
