Anyone help me identify a bug?

    Hi everybody,
    Apologies if wrong forum.

I was wondering if anybody know what kind of bug this is? We found it dead in the conservatory, and my brother who found said he has seen lots of these flying around the garden, and thinks one might have stung our spaniel. He also said that they seemed to be flying around the setter a lot when he was trying to sleep and bugging the hell out of him.n

The first shot is just for scale beside a penny, and the others from different angles (as I have no idea what to look for when ID'ing a bug).

I know all of Gods creatures are beautiful, but this thing kind of freaked me out as its big, hairy and has a nasty stinger tail, and I would like to know if its something odd or dangerous, as with lots of them flying around the garden, I want to make sure we dont need to worry about the dogs being out there at times, or these things coming into the house

    Thanks in advance

Sorry, just to add, they were flying at dusk to dark and were attracted to an outdoor light bulb like moths. Thanks.

I think its a May Bug, also known as a cockchafer. We get them around this time every year just as its getting dark, horrible horrible looking things but as far as I know they are harmless.

    Yes to this.

They do not sting or bite.
