    How do you calculate a batsmans strike rate?

    (runs/ amount of balls faced) * 100.

    It calculates runs per hundred balls

    Very important in T20, I don't think of it as relevant in any other form.

    Important in T20, relevant in ODI, less so in test/first-class. When you've limited balls to score from, scoring quickly is more important.

    Easy example. Trott 58 off 134 (43%) in the first innings v WI.
    "Well played sir! Decent knock."

    Trott 58 off 134 in an ODI?
    "Take him round the back of the nets and shoot him!"

    Well that may be a little extreme but you get the picture.

    T20 is the most relevant form of the game for s/r even at recreational level. In the new LCU 20/20 most teams will look to score a run a ball and thats div 12-14

    Id say strike rate would be relevant in 4/5 day cricket, but the amount of variables makes it a bit hard to determine much from it. You get someone scoring 20 runs from 200 balls in a test match then it could either be a brilliant knock if they need to bat for a day and a half to save a test or are batting on a nightmare of a pitch, but likewise a strike rate of .100 is a disgrace if you need 150 runs to win a test with 40 overs and 10 wickets remaining.

    Even in the longer form of the game Id still take it into account when assessing a batsman, but as others have said its more important in limited overs.

    We lost our 20/20 last year having scored over 170; Ill be looking for more than a run a ball tonight!

    Interesting to see views on strike rate.

    For tests, it must be irrelevant in terms of picking the team, but of course there may be moments when you need to swing the bat...but more so when the match is rain effected.

    In 50 over games, there are 300 balls and a run a ball gives a competitive total on any pitch so perhaps I was too harsh on ODIs.
