MTB - 100 Km

    Hi All,

Planning to do the "Helping Hands Cycle Challenge" in Athy in July organised by the Deenside Wheelers club.

Going to do it on a mountain bike, which I reckon I should be ok on, as I've done spins of around 60Km on it. Bike is Cube Reaction Pro and is quite light as mountain bikes go I suppose.

I've moved the end bars in towards the centre a bit so they act like mini tri bars if you like, so have the option of changing hand position from the standard grips.

However the tyres that are on are 2.25 knobbies, and thinking of putting on slicks, as while I have done 60 Km's no problem adding another 40 on top I reckon might be a killer :)

Anybody suggest a decent slick tyre or what should I be looking at ?

    Many thanks for any suggestions.

    Continental Sport Contact.
I run the 1.3s on my commuter, fantastic tyre. You will be shocked at how much easier it is to cycle on these than your knobblies.

You will need to buy new tubes though, the tubes you have in your 2.25s won't work.

Also lock out your suspension if you can. You don't need it on the road and it only wastes energy.

might sound like silly question - but if the slicks are 26 * 1.3, are the tubes that specific, I see 26 * 1.0 and 26 * 1.5 MTB tubes on the site, would the 1.5's be ok ?

    Thanks again

The tubes should be rated for a range, e.g. 26 * 1.0 - 1.5. Meaning that you can use them for 26 * 1.3 tyres.

Also worth noting that you run these at much higher pressures than your MTB tyres. You're probably running at 40psi, the 1.3 sport contacts run at 85psi. Usually not an issue, but if you have specialist rims on your MTB, it's worth checking that they can handle that pressure.
