Car Tax & NCT

My tax is coming up for renewal in June 2012.

As my car has a 2008 reg it is also due for NCT.

Will I be able to renew tax as normal or do I need to have NCT in place?

Will the Motor Tax authorities need to verify passed NCT before issuing tax certificate?

You only need insurance details to tax your car. They don't ask for NCT.

And they don't even check those.

Rf100a asks for the nct cert number , tax it online, I dont think that asks

just use the pin number they send you to retax the car and you can do it online with a laser card

does it? Certificate of Roadworthiness is what they ask for. AFAIK it doesn't apply to private vehicles. No need for NCT cert when taxing. They are happy to take your money regardless of your car condition.

You don't have to fill that in.

Do the Gardai look for it when checking tax on cars?

I thought so; I'm seeing different version of the form. One says "CERTIFICATE OF ROADWORTHINESS", others say "CERTIFICATE OF ROADWORTHINESS/NCT CERTIFICATE (See note C3 or D)"

    Note D includes:

You MUST include the following with application:
    .............
    .............
Certificate of Roadworthiness or Pass statement issued by authorised tester where appropriate (see Note C3).

    They should be.

You MUST include the following with application:
    .............
    .............
Certificate of Roadworthiness or Pass statement issued by authorised tester where appropriate (see Note C3).
C3 Section 3 - A Certificate of roadworthiness (CRW) is required for:
    • Goods Vehicles, Trailers, Buses or Ambulances over one year old must be tested every year.
    • Design Gross Vehicle Weight (DGVW) is the basis for determining vehicle classification for vehicle testing purposes.
    • Goods Vehicles having (DGVW) of 3,500kg or lower to be tested as a Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) - CRW fee g6.
    • Goods Vehicles having (DGVW) exceeding 3,500kg to be tested as a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HV) - CRW fee g13
If you do not have a current CRW, you must include a Pass Statement issued by an Authorised Tester, together with the appropriate fee with this...

That is the copy of the form taken right now, no mention of NCT...

To the OP - You do not need NCT to tax your car, you do need one to drive it. Simple as that, and ignore all the other posts, as they won't help you at all...

    D. What should accompany this form
You MUST include the following with application:
    • Fee - You must include a cheque or postal order for the correct fee (including arrears where appropriate), made payable to the appropriate
County Council/Borough Councils and crossed “Motor Tax Account”. DO NOT SEND CASH THROUGH THE POST. Contact your local Motor
Tax Office for clarification of the appropriate Motor Tax rates or other payment methods.
    • Certificate of Roadworthiness or Pass statement issued by authorised tester where appropriate (see Note C3).
    • Goods or Recovery Declaration, if applicable (see Note 5.2) and a Weight Docket if ownership has changed since it was last taxed.
    • PSV (plate) Licence - Public Service Vehicles only.
    • Article 60 Licence - School Buses only.
    DISCLOSURE OF

Secion C3 refers to the roadworthiness, D to NCT. Like I said I'm seeing it on some forms, not others; maybe it's something they're introducing.

Old forms did ask for it. Certainly not required now. They only want the money. There was a time a letter from the bishop was needed. Not anymore.

Honestly - i tax car every three months, and the forms are all the same... If you find a link (legitimate one) to one with NCT in it i'll put my hands up. Until then, policy number is all they ask for.

When the nct was introduced first you had to have it before taxing but that didnt last id say as revenue dropped so now as others have said you dont need it.

Actually a NCT strike caused the suspension of the requirement.

Hey guys, a bit off the subject but my car has been off the road for some time so no NCT or Tax. I'm trying to get it back on the road, I was hoping to get the NCT first as if it fails it might take some time to get any issues fixed and then just get the tax as soon as it passes. Does it matter if I show up to the NCT centre with no tax, apart from the obvious hoping I don't meet a checkpoint on the way to the place?
