ISP vs Router problem

    Hi all,

I'm hoping you'll be able to help me with a problem I'm having at the moment. We have sattelite broadband by a pretty large company that specialises in connections in rural areas, its nothing to write home about but it works.

Recently the receive blew down in the high wind and after to'ing and fro'ing the ISP finally sent someone out to fix it. Having connected it up, the technician could not complete configuration of the network as the office was closed and he did not have the username and password for the PPPoE connection. I've called the ISP and gotten the username and password - confirmed via email they are correct.

At the moment, the situation is that, when I enter the username and password on the router in the PPPoE connection settings of the router, the internet light blinks and I cannot connect either wirelessly or wired. The router does not receive the DNS or ISP gateway address.

    I have done the following;

    1. Reset (hard and soft) the router
    2. Re-entered the settings again - still the same
    3. Disabled all security and firewalls
    4. Switched to dynamic connection type - router connects to the internet, I can access it through wired connection but not wirelessly
    5. Switched to static connection type - manually entered the gateway and DNS address, again I can access it through wired connection
    6. Plugged the connection from the aerial directly into my laptop - again works fine.

I've spoken to the ISP and they have said its a router issue - nothing to do with them. They haven't returned any of my calls or my emails since.

I understand where the ISP is coming from, it works fine from the cable to the aerial but the problem only arises when I'm trying to set up the PPPoE connection - as per their directions.

The router is a belkin g router.

Any help or advise is appreciated and sorry about the long post

The router is a belkin g router.

That could well be your problem. Belkin make some terrible crap networking products. I've had nothing but problems with Belkin, they feck up and reset for no reason. They can't be trusted to dial PPPoE.

Yea it wouldn't have been my first choice, but it was there when I moved into the house. Can you recommend a cheap alternative? If I get a new router and it doesn't work, I'll invoice my ISP for it.

OP - also ring your ISP and request them to provide a router.
Most ISP's provide their own recommended router, sometimes it comes pre-configured with your account details so it is basically plug and play.

Advantage here is that they can then support any issues you have...
Just plugged in my replacement router today - last one got blown by lightening hitting the phones lines.

Thanks Taltos, I'll try them again today. Their aftersales support is brutal though, average hold time is about 15 minutes whenever I seem to call
