Hotels in Rome

Hi there. My wife and I are going to Rome (minus the kids) next February. I have never been there before so i am looking for advise/suggestions on Hotels.

We are only going for 3 nights so we want to be in the centre of Rome ie walking distance to Colosseum (on my bucket list) and other places of interest.

Not looking to break the bank here so unless 5 star hotels are doing truly unbelievable deals we can leave them out.

    Thursday to a Sunday.

    Cheers in advance.

    Mark.

I found Rome, along with Paris, one of the trickier places to find somewhere decent to stay without paying megabucks. In the end I settled on around €150p/n after many weeks on Trip Advisor, that's really all you can do, there are no shortage of hotels so you just need to go with your gut instinct and choose one you think will fit your needs.

We stayed near Termini (Bus/Train Station) but with the tourist pass thingy were able to hop on buses freely to get around. Colosseum is a sight to behold btw

Stayed at the hotel Diana Roof Garden in March. It was very nice and about 5 mins walk from Termini train station where the airport bus arrives. About 80 a night, I think.

I would concur that there are a load of nice, small, affordable hotels (and some cheaper hostel types, I think) within walking distance of the Termini train/bus station which is handy for the train to/from the main Fuimicino airport which is the one Aer Lingus use - Ryanair fly into the other one.

We stayed in one called Hotel Columbia which was very comfortable and handy for touring around the city - there's a metro stop around the corner and the hop on/off city tour buses call at the train station. I particularly liked the hotel's roof garden - no view to speak of but alfresco breakfast and nightcaps among the lemon trees was very enjoyable. You could even walk it to the Colesseum from there if you're not anyway impared and its not blisteringly hot. But there's a fair bit of walking around the multitude of sights anyway so I would suggest saving yourself and take the metro/commuter buses and tour buses around. Oh and take care crossing the road, they all drive like maniacs.

I am not sure but I suspect you'd be paying serious money for anywhere very near any of the main attractions. In fact a large area around the Colesseum is more Roman ruins anyway. But its jaw-dropping stuff. Enjoy!
