speeding points

Hi - I've just found an unopened letter from early 2011 for my husband. It's notifying him of a speeding offence in Feb of last year - he was aware that he had been caught speeding (one and only time this has happened) but was driving someone else's car at the time. The owner gave him the letter about the speeding notice and my husband submitted a copy of his licence and cheque for the 80e, but the Gardai wrote back to us telling him that they would contact him directly regarding the matter - they returned the cheque.

We obviously didn't read this letter for my husband as it is unopened and must have just got caught in with other stuff on that particular day.

Anyway - it's over a year ago now since the offence in question, and over a year since the date of the letter. We've obviously done nothing about it and have not been contacted by the gardai in the intervening period. I'm afraid to phone the gardai in case we end up getting a summons to court having ignored the letter.

    What do we do?

    Thanks

yes better to phone them. It may still exist somewhere and could cause problems later

I agree with contacting the Gardai too. Better to deal with it now, lest it resurface at a later time.

If you knew a Guard, perhaps have a chat with them in the meantime to see how to go about this and what their thoughts are on the matter.

I just thought I would update this thread with the outcome.

We took the advice and contacted a garda we know working in traffic. He looked into it and it appears that even though a summons was raised, the gardai never served it. My husband was to have appeared at a court date last year but obviously didn't know so didn't turn up. It was then thrown out by the judge as the gardai obviously couldn't prove they had served the summons.

So all is well in the end!

    Thanks!
