That's only OK, not great. Fota have a bucketload of opens, etc where you can play the course for 40-50 euro - mind you, you'd miss the scones, jam & cream.

In fact, looking at those offers, it's positively bad value! Unless, of course, the real attraction is the scones, jam & cream and the golf is only a teaser!

Oh and I must say Fota is one of my favourite courses - well the original 18 are. The new nine I don't like at all!

It does include Golf Buggy hire and it's for anytime too. Not Bad.

    Hi guys,

Denis here from Fota Island Resort.

As quoted by the member above it is a really good deal.

For example if two people were to play on a Sunday afternoon the green fees would be €82 each. Then if you add a golf buggy which is €30 and tea and scones which would be €5 the total cost would be €199.

So the Group On deal is a very good offer.

If ye ever have any questions please do not hesitate in contacting the Pro Shop on 021 488 3700 or by emailing me at DBuckley@fotaisland.ie, we are always here to help.

If ye would like to receive our newsletter where we always have great offers included please email me ye're contact information and I would be delighted to add ye.

Does not seem like a good deal to me- tea and scone for flip sake! The place is now valued at 20 million from 90 million- time to offer some better deals to get customers in.

Fota has 27 holes. A top class 18 where they held the Irish Open and an additional 9 that are very average. Chances are you'll be playing the poor nine and then nine of the Championship Course. So not as good a deal as it seems at first glance.

That's it in a nutshell. The 3rd nine isn't bad - it just suffers in comparison to the original 18. Also the 'flow' of the 2 eighteens with the new nine is all wrong. The one where you play the original back nine and the new nine has 4 par fives in 5 holes around the turn and 6 holes in a row without a par 4. Anyone who knows anything about golf course design will tell you that the most important thing in a course is the flow - how coherent the course is.

They seem to have ballsed up the course with this new nine by ensuring that you never know which course you'll be playing. Much better, IMHO, to have a standard 18 with the other nine only used occasionally or for practice when the main course is busy - like Portmarnock, for example. Pity, really, as the original 18 is a cracking course.

    Hi guys,

Ok, I'll deal with the most important issue first - the jam. We offer a selection of homemade jams, namely strawberry, raspberry and blackberry to suit all tastes...I hope this will put peoples minds at ease :).

As regards the flow of the course ones opinion is subjective and positive and negative comparisons can be made.

What I can say is that the additional nine holes were designed by Jeff Howes, who also designed the original nine. He was given the same brief for the additional nine as he was for the original nine all those years back.

Obviously with any new addition to a course it takes a number of years to settle and mature.

For example, if you know our Deerpark course you will know the second hole, which is one of the strongest holes on the course. A number of year’s back this hole was revamped by Jeff Howes. He changed the design of the fairway to a slight left to right dog leg from the opposite layout previously.

Part of this revamp included a large number of trees being planted on the right hand side of the hole. These trees took between five and seven years to mature. During that time should one hit their ball into those trees it was pot luck if you had a shot to get back out. However, nowadays if you went into those trees it would be near to impossible to get out.

Similar tree planting is evident on the additional nine holes, and as time progresses we will see similar results. I could outline other examples both for and against your argument but we will leave it as a subjective topic.

For me personally, I like the test, and I agree it is novel to have so many par fives so nearby. It is a good opportunity to score build in my book, it is up to you to decide if I mean lots of sevens or lots of fours.

Anyway, in relation to the Group On deal, you are told at the time of booking what course you will be playing on the day, so one can in fact choose the course one plays if you have a subjective view towards the configuration.

I really hope this helps, if one should have any jam requests I will try my best (but I cant promise anything :))

    Regards,

    Denis
