Finally got the bonnet done á la Stewie's Bora post on DW. I took the kidneys off almost as soon as I got it.

    Some shnaps: -

    - build up the paint (bit sloppy)

    step1.jpg

    - 3M finesse it stick with 9 micron sanding paper
    step2.jpg

    - post sanding. Started to get worried here
    step3.jpg

    - measles. Looks terrible. Very worried.
    step4.jpg

    step5.jpg

    - DA with Sonus 1. Phew.
    step6.jpg

    step7.jpg

    step8.jpg

    - on with the Svisswax
    step9.jpg

    - new Roundel and back on with the decco's
    step10.jpg

    step11.jpg

    - cleaned the carpets too. APC heaven. Had already cleaned and nourished the leather.
    step12.jpg

    step13.jpg

    finished1.jpg

    finished2.jpg

As per the 'keep her or the 8' chat, this machine is going on the market. In good shape both body and mechanics.

Bonnet came up very well I think.

edit: - Just to mention, I used Sonus 1 through 4 then the wax.

edit2: - I'd question the quality of the paint from paints4u.com Didn't seem to match perfectly but it might be down to the clearcoat delete.

Just curious, what would a car like that be worth, was watching wheeler dealers earlier where they did one up.

'did one up' is all they did ;)

I've spent 2k on full service, 1k on tyres and there's 2x Maf's for it in the garage. Not to mention all the effort I have put in.

    I paid 10 for it......

Nah. I didn't build up the paint enough (on some parts) but it's not too bad.

Probably not a great idea trying this for the first time on an M5 :o

What does this mean, just that its not lacquered?

How will this affect it over time? Will you just have to make sure its always got a good layer of wax on it?

I have a touch up set that has the paint and then the lacquer to put on top of it after its properly dry. Its ok for bad stone chips and takes the worst of the look of them but when up close it looks like the picture around your grill before you went at it with the DA.

BTW nice job on the bonnet!

    Morning.

I have no definitive answer about this option and can't fine one. I've asked BMW Ireland as well as the dealer that sold the car originally and they don't know.

Some say that you can't have a metalic basecoat without lacquer.

I think that there is no lacquer layer on the car. I have seen this as I dremelled through some of the stone chips.

My current thinking is that perhaps the lacquer is built in to the basecoat as opposed to sprayed over it.

The finish is very tough though and seems to be less prone to scratching/swirling.

I've measured the thickness and it's at c. 120 around the car apart from the bonnet which was polished previously.
