Under the Fixed Term Work Act 2003 you need 4 years continuous employment (no gaps). Once you start a new contract and go into a 5th year you are then entitled to be made permanent. Exceptions being contracts to cover maternity leave, researchers in universities etc. as they are viewed of being temporary in nature.

And those engaged through employment / recruitment agencies are also exempted

i thought that if the contract wasnt by broken more than six months at any stage , it would affect the time you.ve built up through tempoary contracts??
