    HI Guys

Help needed, I checked old treads but couldnt find anything.

A work colleague has a USB that has a lot of information on it that would save us about 6 weeks of work on a project.........if it worked!!!

I opened the USB on a work PC only to find all the folders in symbols and letters so I took it home to try it on my mac and ever since I tried to open it on the mac it won’t show in the my computer folder. It also won’t show in Disk management ether.

I sent it across to a computer shop and they took a look but to no avail, am I doomed to spend the next 6 weeks catching up or is it fixable?

Any programmes I could try using to save the info?

Many Thanks...........(goes to shoot work colleague for not backing up)

Does the Mac still see it? Have you tried TestDisk and PhotoREC (works on Mac as well)

TRY it from a pc using linux, livecd eg mint os.runs from cdr.
i got a drive 300gig many folders ,titles ,are mix symbols, letters ,random nos,
But i can acess all files ,i just open the folders ,all files are still there.
eg mp3s, avi files are all there,
i can use search ,avi, or mp3 to find files,or just open folders.
    i didnt lose any file,
Its, just that, most folder names are randomly scrambled.
try in pc in netcafe,pc ruuning win7 ,or winxp.
    ie different os.
whats the drive format, ntfs, fat32.?
    see
    http://www.piriform.com/docs/recuva/introducing-recuva/what-it-can-and-cant-do
I see no point in try ing to acess a dodgey drive in pc format from a
    MAC.
    You could buy a laptop 2.oghz 1gigram on adverts.ie for 110 euro,
to try and acess the drive.

Have you tried repairing it in Disk Utility?

if You want to fix or acess the data ,you,ll need a real pc ,or laptop running winxp,or win 7 ,
ie the chances of fixing it with a mac is close to zero.IF you use the mac you could make it worse as mac osx uses a different disk file format.
i understand some mac osx leopard can enable ntfs disk read ,ntfs file
format compatibility but its not perfect ,not as good as a real windows pc.
The drive may be in fat32 format which is not readable ,mac compatible
    as far as i know.
older pc drives sometimes are formatted in fat32 disk format.
if buying laptop buy an windows xp,or win7 laptop.

If the above fail, download this; http://www.oo-software.com/en/download/current/oodiskrecovery and see can you see the folders & files. Pricey, though, and depending how big the drive is, and how powerful your PC is.

FAT32 is readable and compatible with Mac OS. As is NTFS. The Disk Utility in Mac can just about handle anything.

Your prob better off not writing to a NTFS partition on a Mac or even Linux for that matter, stick to ext/hfs/fat32 etc.
