It's a 2004 Renault Megane 16V CABRIOLET DYNA, 1.6 Petrol, mileage is 128,000 M / 205,996 KM, the NCT is April 2012 which means it's up so that makes me anxious because what if it doesn't pass and loads needs to be done?

It's €2,699 they said it's the price because of a scrape over one of the rear wheels which wouldn't bother me anyway. I've seen pictures of it and it looks really good which is why I'm wondering why it's that price. It's 2 door and I think it's 2 seater but the picture isn't clear. I know little about cars and wouldn't even know if that price is fair or not. If I was to buy a car I have a friend who knows a lot about them so he would be helping me but I'm just trying to get an idea of what's out there.

I'm just looking for a first car for under €3,000 nothing special but something nice and reliable if I can.

I wouldnt touch a car without an nct that has expired. At the very least id want seller to put it though, and even if it fails, if its small stuff you can get it rectified yourself (IF you choose to purchase). A car with nct is more valuable and a seller selling without it, would suggest to me that either A: they are lazy B: they know work needs going...

First car? Do yourself a favour and buy a good Fiesta 1.25 privately.

Privately would be grand for someone who has a good knowledge of car's or has a friend/uncle/family member who knows their stuff. If the OP isn't that person and doesn't have someone with reasonable knowledge of car's I'd suggest going down the dealer route. It may be more expensive but it can give peace of mind to a first time driver.

the next cheapest on carzone, looks like it doesnt have the damaged panel, also it has half the mileage and 3 months tax left (worth E160) you will get more for it when it comes to selling it and Id say there is alot less to go wrong with it, at the mileage of the one you have linked to a host of work might require doing if it hasnt already been done...

IMO being a good judge of character can be at least as important an asset as mechanical knowledge when buying privately. And the kind of dealers who sell €3000 cars will see her coming and take full advantage. Plus, the OP says they have a friend who can help them out. :)

Oops didn't see that last bit apologies. In that case privately would be the way to go then. Still buyer beware and all that. :)

An expired NCT would turn me off reading the ad, nevermind consider buying it to be honest.

I wouldn't touch one with a quarter of the mileage. The roofs are an expensive disaster from new.

That's the thing, there's nothing which redeems the Megane enough to warrant the risk when you could have better car's for the money. I do think they're quirky looking in a cool way though.
