    Hi guys,

    Quick question for you?

Engine popped its clogs in my 00 1.4 litre petrol Golf this morning.

It had an AHW engine in it, from ringing various dismantlers the only replacement engine that could be found was an AXP, are these easily interchangeable?

Thanks a million for any responses

    TD

Just put 100k on it last week, not sure what caused it yet but think it may have been the head gasket.

The engines are different. Your AHW engine has a mechanical EGR connected to the exhaust manifold, the AXP has an electric EGR connected directly to the side of the cylinder head.

It may be possible to make the AXP work in place of an AHW engine if you blank off the EGR port on the side of the head and just use the AHW manifold but I don't know, I have never tried it.

If your own engine is repairable it is a better option in any case.

Thanks George, I'll hopefully get home for a look at the engine tomorrow, but I don't think it's really an option. If it's a non-runner I think I'll just hang on until I can get an AHW for it. There's no point in over complicating the job!

If its only a head gasket thats gone why would you be looking for a new engine?

Well I can't really be 100% certain that it is the head, so my thinking was that a new engine would be a safer bet.

There was oil in the 3rd spark plug when I was looking at it 2 days before the oil burst out onto the engine. I was reading somewhere (can't remember where) that if that's the case you'd be better replacing it with a new engine.

All the plugs are still sparking and leads are working btw.

Thanks for all the replies also, I'm not an expert at this, the ould fella will be taking the lead on any fix/replacement. I'm only the student :pac:

I'd let an expert look at it tbh, nothing you have said points to a head gasket failure. It may simply be a blocked breather box.

+1, sending an engine to the scrap because you read somewhere that it "might" be fcuked could be completely unnecessary and costing you loads of money for no good reason.
