I am having serious problems in work and I am putting it down to Dyslexia. I was assessed as a child and was found to be Dyslexic but I dont have any record of it at this stage.

Does any one know if you can claim it off your health insurance? Dyslexia Association of Ireland have quoted me €400 but there is a 10 month wait list

Probably a question you need to ask your Health Insurance provider. I've no idea what kind of policy you have, I'm afraid. :)

It's not a disease. I was diagnosed as dyslexic as a child. I had terrible problems. But as an adult you can learn to cope with it. There are varying degrees to it. If you had severe dyslexia as a child, you'd know all about it.

What's the particular problem you're having at work? Although I don't have much of problem with it now days, sometime there are things that can causes me problems. Print on glaring white paper I tend to read wrong.

If you could find a primary school special needs teacher they'd probably be able to give you a quick test to see if you are dyslexic.

Hi, my 18year old son was diagnosed with Dyslexia the other day, he is due to sit his leaving cert in 2 weeks time. All during his school life he has been labelled as lazy and 'could try harder'. I cant believe the school as educators has failed him.
A teacher was giving out to him and asked had he ever had a dyslexia test, then
remarked that he'd be too lazy to do one.

I paid 500. Why was this not picked up in school. Also he is too late for the DARE programme. He will get help if he gets to 3rd level but the problem is getting there,

He may be as well off to repeat the leaving cert. A lot of the problems with dyslexia can be over come with time. Dyslexics can mess up exams because they make little mistakes in things like maths or in writing sentences.

I too was diagnosed as a child but back then the Dyslexia label would have encompased a lot of other things on the autistic spectrum so OP you might need to spend a bit more money getting a diagnosis as Dyslexia might just be part of the problem.

12 year old nephew has just being diagnosed just before he heads into secondary school, it appears unless its severe it slips by teachers who just think the child is lazy.

I work as a private educational & clinical psychologist, specialising in Dyslexia assessments. You can not claim the assessment from your private health insurance, but you can claim something back on the MED1 form at the end of the tax year, so that is worth a try.

A lot of adults who were assessed with Dyslexia as children can get a review adult assessment done. It is great to identify how you learn best, your strengths, areas of difficulty and strategies to help.

I had another test done when I was 16 (after initially getting one done when 9 I think) but I'm 24 now, would the last one I did be a review adult assessment?

I've learned to cope as best I can but do tend to mess up exams quite often, regardless of how much study I'd do. Also being told I wasn't dyslexic enough to gain and compensations in the LC or in college was a bit of a kick in the teeth.

Please take personal queries to PM or Personal Issues. Thanks. JC

What would you be hoping to gain from a diagnosis? I often though of getting an official diagnosis, but I dislike labels, I get on fine I have a degree and have found ways around issues.
