Does anybody know if it is possible to marry a 40GB Blue-ray drive to an 80 GB PS3?
I know it is possible if you have service dongles etc..... but is there anyway it can be done without the dongle... Also the PS3 is at FW 4.11 which probably makes it more difficult...
    Any help would be great...
    Thanks

Probably should consult a priest? (sorry, couldn't resist :o)

Just to clear up the question - you want to replace the drive on an 80gb PS3 with that of a 40gb PS3? Can't imagine the Blu-Ray drives are any different, although couldn't tell you how doable it is.

Blur ray drives are married to the motherboard of your PS3 so my problem is....
I have a working 80Gb motherboard without a blueray drive. I also have a 40Gb PS3 which the motherboard does not work in but the blueray does so I want to put the Blueray into the 80Gb PS3.
Unless they are married it won't recognize the disks

I wouldn't advise that, there's no known way to exit the vendor mode from firmware 3.55 upwards due to newly signed files.

    What firmware are you on

4.11 which makes it even worse.... Surely a repair shop has the ability to remarry boards and drives?
I read somewhere if you have the board from another 80gb blue ray drive it might work but sounds a bit suspicious to me....

An authorised repair shop yes, not your average phone/computer repair shop type place. As I said, the private keys needed to sign the exit file are encrypted & unknown.

The boards are paired on a per console basis, dropping in another consoles board will not work.

This is a Sony only repair job realistically
