Hello, been puzzling over this damselfly seen last week. Either its an azure or a variable damselfly female. There seem to be features to suggest it could be either. Variable seems closest to a match but I'm not an Odontate expert. Anybody know how to solve the mystery? :D

These 2 are tough to separate in the absence of males.
I'm confident it is Azure. No bar between pale spots on head.
The defining feature is the shape of segment between head and body. I can't make this out in your photo. The amount of blue on the abdomen is variable within both species.

Thank you Mothman (and swifts). Nearby males where indeed azure damsels so that would make sense, will be returning to the site next week for another look. Fota gardens near Cork city is the location by the way
